Hi, I wanted to make a post to introduce myself and ask a couple of questions. I am completely new to the site and to nursing. I turn 26 years old next week and have decided that I want to become a nurse. After struggling with changing my major several times and being in and out of school and working, I think I have finally made the right choice for myself and I am very excited to move forward with my goals.
I am taking my pre-reqs for the ADN programs here in California, I still have to take chemistry, microbio, anatomy, physiology and a few gen ed classes. I am taking some classes this semester and should be finished by Spring 2009, so that I can apply for the nursing program in Fall 2009. Since I'll be trying to get into an ADN program in a California community college, I'm planning to apply to more than one and I hope that I will get lucky and get in somewhere.
My question is, is it better to get your ADN and get your RN license first then apply to try to get into a BSN program? I would ultimately like to get my BSN, most likely from a Cal State and from what I read about their BSN programs, they were typically RN-BSN, which is why I'm getting my ADN first. I'm also wondering if that route would be easier for me to get into a BSN program by getting my ADN and RN license first?
I really hope to get into a nursing program next Fall, my grades aren't super spectacular as I did mess up a couple of gen ed courses which I will be retaking to get a better grade so that the bad grades can be retracted from my GPA before I apply. I'm thinking my best bet would be to do very well in the pre-req courses so my GPA will be high for those courses and it will also boost my overall GPA up.
I appreciate any advice/input from all of you, especially those of you in So Cali, that know about the impacted nursing programs in the community colleges, CSU's and UC's. Looking forward to participating on the forum and chatting with you all :) Thanks for reading my long post lol.

welcome to allnurses!:wlcmggrp:
i'm in the same situation as you are, debating to get my adn/rn license or my bsn. it all basically depends on you though. i've decided to get my adn first for a number of reasons, first the cost for courses are cheaper at community college, second i can always go back to get my bsn( most hospitals pay tuiton reimbursement for students going back to school to get there rn-bsn). but if you want to advance further into your nursing studies i would prefer to do the bsn program.
there are also topics on this site about the difference between adn or bsn as well.
hoped i helped. good luck!:loveya:

hi and welcome! i decided to go into nursing at 25 after changing majors 3 times. i went the adn route. both the adn and bsn pay is usually the same, the only difference is with a bsn you could be have a management position if you wanted to go for that. i have the credits to go for a bsn once i pass boards, but am not sure if i will go in that direction just yet. once you start applying for nursing schools, maybe you could apply to both adn and bsn schools just to give yourself more options since getting in nursing school is such a competition!
wish you the very best! allnurses.com will be here to support you! :)
