It all depends upon how far you want to drive. I am in Denison TX about 60 miles north and we had MANY students in my class that drove up from the MetroPlex because they couldn't get into the schools down there.

I'm sure there are many schools in the Dallas area, but the only ones I know of are Collin County Community College and the school up here, Grayson County College. But you can do your pre-requisites anywhere.

You need to get on the internet now and do a search of nursing programs in North Texas, find the ones you want to apply to, get a copy of their program requirements and begin to fulfill them. When you are ready to apply, get everything together and apply. Always be ready early. Don't procrastinate.

Good luck.

are you wanting to go RN or LVN?

There are a couple of Nursing programs within the Dallas County Community College District (DCCCD). El Centro has a program with a satellite program at Northlake (in Irving) and Brookhaven has a program with a satellite program at Mountain View. All the colleges are found under www.dcccd.edu .... As someone above stated, find out the pre-reqs and you can take those anywhere...

RN.how many years it is?

ADN Nursing Program is 4 semesters (2 years)

As a newbie to texas I would recommend that you start at a community college since you can't get any state aid due to residency. At least the comm. college is affordable so you can start working on your prequisites. The LVN schools in Texas are high way robbery. In NY I paid maybe 8,000 in Texas try 18,000

$18000 is outrageous. Here in N. Texas our LVN program wouldn't be nearly that expensive even if you're paying out of state tuition!

As for the length of RN (ADN) school. True that the actual nursing program is only 2 years but pre-reqs are almost that long themselves especially due to limited seating in those pre-req classes. Be prepared to spend 4 years on it whether it's getting your pre-reqs or waiting on the waiting list and then count yourself lucky if you get thru sooner.

No matter what, good luck!

I would say it takes 3 years, if you make the grades, you get in pretty much. 1 year of preqs and 2 years of nursing school if your going full time. I'm currently going to El Centro College for their ADN program, this is my last semester of preqs, I plan to apply for fall 08. It really doesn't matter if I wind up at El Centro (downtown Dallas) or Northlake (Irving), I just want to get the degree and make good money a lot sooner. Personally I like the program, I've heard great things about it. My friend just got accepted for this spring semester of 08 and she applied for late admission after the fall semester of 07. She attends North Lake and she loves it! So she'll be done in 2 1/2 years., which is great. So you never know what can happen. They had 13 slots open at North Lake after the official filing period was up, and 3 at El Centro. She had the grades and got in...its that simple.

The program is well recognized around the Dallas Metroplex and it is truly cost effective, the WHOLE cost of the program is about $7,300 which is great because that could be ONE semester at a university, and you still come out as an RN. You would only have to pay out of state fees for a year and then you would be considered a resident, I know because my husband was is from out of state, he's been here a little over a year now and this semester they switched his fees to Dallas County resident. Let me know if you have anymore questions good luck, and let us know what you decide.

Yes here is North Texas that what the going rate is for LVN school at Concorde - Dallas Institute. It doesn't take 4 years at a comm. college if you know how to schedule your classes and take classes during the summer. For example at TCC starting in June taking A & P 1 and 2 during the summer session. Followed by Chemistry with Eng 1 and Intro to Psych and math if needed. This now qualifies you to apply to the program in January for September. In the mean time you take Micro, Psych 2, Eng 2 and Concepts of physical activity(if you fancy). This way when you start you only have your RN classes. Not even 1 year for the prereqs. Ta Da!!!

:blushkiss

Since you are in Irving, I highly recommend the El Centro/Northlake route. I currently attend Northlake and doing my pre-reqs. The EC/NL has the least amount of prereqs to apply which is appealing. The campus is great and so far the teachers I have are better than the ones at TCC in the past.

Northlake is in north Irving (technically I think its Las Colinas) off 114 and Mac Arthur.

If you think the private LVN schools in Texas are committing highway robbery, you have not seen some of the tuitions in Southern California. Some of the private LVN programs in that area charge over $30,000 in tuition.

If course, these schools would not be able to maintain expensive tuitions if it weren't for the numerous students out there who are so very willing to pay so much.
