New Substitute School Nurse

Specialties School

Published

Hi!

I've been approved to be a substitute school nurse at my children's school. It's a private school with infants through 12th grade. I have 6 years of experience as a level III NICU nurse, but no school nurse experience. I'm looking for any resources and tips to help me prepare. I've joined the National Association of School Nurses. Thank you in advance for your help!

Specializes in pediatrics, school nursing.

There are 3 or 4 threads in the first page that are new school nurses looking for advice! One is even a former NICU nurse, I believe! Check those out. We've all commented on them with general information that would be very helpful to you, too! ? Good luck!

Thank you! I'll try to find them. I'm still getting used to navigating this website. I haven't been on here in years.

No worries! There are so many threads. I wouldn't doubt if this was one of the more active specialty boards. I went ahead and linked the recent ones for you. Some are more the advice route, one is a difficult situation that a new school nurse is facing and some of the user input on that... Good luck! I hope you find it enticing enough that you join our ranks!! It's the hidden gem of the nursing profession, IMO!

For a good laugh, search out the "C'mon Now!!!" Thread...

Thank you so much! I hope so too. I never thought I would do anything except for NICU, but after having kids this seems like a great option. The weekends and holidays grew old even once I switched to PRN. Childcare was difficult, but switching to nightshift wasn't an option (my body hates nights). After thinking long and hard, I realized I needed to rule out hospital nursing. I want to be home with my kids when they're home from school. I'm hoping this is a good fit! I'm excited, but nervous too!

Oh my goodness I could have written this myself! 6 years NICU experience, mostly all Level III and now potentially making the switch to substitute school nursing! I’ll be subbing in the same district as my son’s school and will be K-12 as well. I’m already feeling lost and clueless. I desperately need to brush up on general pediatric stuff as the only things I know are NICU-related!! Best of luck to you and please update here if you find any really useful info!
