Hi all....
I just enrolled at our local CC to start my pre-reqs... :) I am a 36 (almost 37) year old mom of three high school teenagers.
Scared to death of going back to school but way more excited than scared. I will hopefully be in the fall nursing class of 2010 which seems like forever away but I'm sure it will go by fast.
Oh I'm in the Tidewater area of VA...so I'll be going to TCC. My classes this semester are English 111, Biology 100 and Intro to Healthcare. :)
Have a great day!!!

:heartbeat Welcome to the forum!
There are a lot of folks here that started later than you!
I started my pre-reqs a year ago. I am finishing them up right now. I am a 46 yo mother of 5 --- 23 yo (daughter) Combat medic currently stationed in Iraq, 21 yo Army Vet son living with his dad right now in MS as a pipefitter, 20 yo son @ FCCJ, 19 yo daughter at UNF and a 15 yo daughter a Sophomore in HS.
You can do this!
hey flmom... :)
thanks so much for your reply. :)
I have a 17 yo daughter a senior in HS (can't believe that)
a 16 yo daughter a junior
and a 15 yo son who is a Freshman (he missed the kindergarten birthday cutoff by a week so we kept him in preschool an extra year)
I get worried sometimes that I getting too late of a start.
What was your first year like? You are all done with your pre-reqs? Any advice? Things to look out for in any particular class?
My sister-in-law and brother-in-law are both nurses at Shands down in Gainesville... what part of FL are you in?
I would PM all these ??? if I knew how.... LOL but I can't figure it out yet. :icon_roll

Hi
I'm 45, and I'm in my first semester of nursing school! There are at least 5 other women in my program that are older than me, many are also in their 30's. It's never too late!

I'm 39yo and taking Anatomy now, will take Physiology next semester, then waiting and hoping (*crossing fingers*) to get into the nursing program in Fall 2010.
My son is 8yo (third grade) and he thinks it's cool that Mommy goes to school too!

Yes, I am just about done with all my prereqs! Whew! OK, I had a prior Bachelors in Engineering so some classes I already had completed 25 yrs ago. The ones I had to take were purely NS related and Eng Comp since I CLEP'd out of those in 79. (They would have given me a "C" in the NS point calcs....no way! LOL)
It got tougher on me with each semester....not the course difficulty, just doing it. I work FT and although I have recently married again, my husband lives in another state during the week and is home on the weekends. (Well, we have been doing this for 6 yrs.....) It gets tiring - also because I am a contract programmer, I can't afford to take vacations since I dont get paid when I dont work! So the stress was getting to me a bit.
I am going to take the spring off and wait for the NS summer session to start in earnest. I will most likely go back on anti-depressants for the stress, but not too overly concerned about that. It helps.
I live in Jacksonville. And my 15 yo Soph will be 16 on Jan 2nd so I know about those cut offs. Also my 19 yo's BD is today and she is a fresh at UNF. Its ok, they get more time with you!
My advice is to carve out a specific schedule for yourself. "On this day from these hours I will do my work/studies." When you commit to this and follow through, you can succeed. Do not doubt yourself, nor feel guilty. What you do is in the best interest of everyone. Sit down and focus.
I can't point out anything with any particular class for a couple of reasons. First, your school may be different from mine. Second, I took my classes online - and they are a different beast.
Stay in touch! I'd like to hear about your progress! :heartbeat:nurse:

welcome. i am a 37 year old father of 2 going back to school. i have just finished up all my prereqs this semester and will hopefully be starting the nursing program fall of 2009. good luck with your pursuits, and always remember why you started this quest.
someone from one of my classes posted this. i thought it was really nice (no idea who the author is).
being a nurse means...
you will never be bored.
you will always be frustrated.
you will be surrounded by challenges.
so much to do and so little time.
you will carry immense responsibility
and very little authority.
you will step into people's lives
and you will make a difference.
some will bless you.
some will curse you.
you will see people at their worst...
and at their best.
you will never cease to be amazed
at people's capacity for
love, courage, and endurance.
you will see life begin...and end.
you will experience resounding triumphs
and devastating failures.
you will cry a lot.
you will laugh a lot.
you will know what it is to be human
and to be humane.
