I wouldn't call it a giant blob that suffocates you but like any job there are going to be sacrifices. It's good you are thinking about that now. The truth is you will be missing some soccer games, most scraped knees and also weekends and major holidays. You need to decide for you how much of a sacrifice you are willing to make. I finally got tired of feeling like I was missing everything so I quit a quasi "prestigious" job to work in a clinic that gave me the hours I wanted. That was after more than 2 decades of shift work. But even my clinic hours would cause me to miss kids' stuff and it's hard to schedule doctors appointments and hair appointments and the like.
You won't miss everything. You have to realize you will some stuff, including holidays. This will be true while going to school as well. Your family will have to realize that you simply won't be there all the time. Usually the jobs with the dream hours requireyears of seniority or experience first.

i have been reading this site for awhile checking out what nurses have to say about their profession. i am just about to go into nursing school and am so excited to become a nurse and care for others. that being said...reading these forums kills my enthusiasm a bit. is it possible to have a work/life balance and be an RN? i want to be a wonderful, caring nurse however i also want to be there for soccer games/scrapped knees once i have children. from the sounds of the posters nursing is a giant blob that sits on your life & suffocates it...
