  1. Love the mom bag name haha. he guilt of not having the baby skin to skin while mom is trying to eat or sleep is probably a real issue. I'm amazed at how immediate the 'mom guilt' is haha.
  2. hahaha I don't know much about the science around that, but unfortunately (for me) it's probably good for the mothers skin
  3. Thank you! Yes that is definitely a risk for the baby, and accidental co-sleeping. I'm starting to think there really may not be any risks for the mother in particular (aside from overheating)
  4. Hello all :) I am a bit stumped on the potential risks for the mother regarding skin to skin care. The only one I can think of is overheating & I can't find much in the literature indicating other risks. Any info would be much appreciated!

I am a BSN student in British Columbia and I am very interested in working in public health once I graduate. I know this may take some time to achieve, but I want to start preparing myself now. I would love any & all advice regarding how to best set myself up for a job in the public health field. What extra courses should I take? Should I search for a particular summer job? Any advice in general? Thank you so much!
  6. i was more speaking about this part of the convo: Nursing doesn't have to be some mighty all consuming fire that burns down your life and sits in its place. The martyr look is out. There are options and you can cut your own path if you are smart, creative, and ignore the finger wagging know it alls. I can count the number of holidays I have worked in 20 years.
  7. congrats future nursies!
  8. I love what Conqueror+ said on other comment: Wow. Accusing the OP of being, selfish, immature, whiny etc.. because she asked a question is a bit much. In my 20 years I have learned a very valuable lesson. Don't let anyone dictate your career path. I come from a family of RN's and everybody told me Ihad to "pay my dues" and work in a hospital when I graduated. Well that was a lie because I wasn't going to work anywhere for almost the same $$ I was making as a CNA through an agency. I found a job as a dialysis nurse and went through their training program (which still exists BTW). After a year of that I became a travel nurse and the rest is lucrative history. I was making more than my mom a 20 year veteran RN by my 3rd year as a nurse. My point is people give you their opinion on what it takes to be a good nurse or a real nurse or whatever "I am the real thing" comparison they come up with. Nursing doesn't have to be some mighty all consuming fire that burns down your life and sits in its place. The martyr look is out. There are options and you can cut your own path if you are smart, creative, and ignore the finger wagging know it alls. I can count the number of holidays I have worked in 20 years. I eventually made it to M/S but for the money and schedule I wanted. There is more than one way to be a nurse and if God and family are most important to you tell him that in prayer and put those things first. He will bless you with a position that won't interfere with them. IGNORE anyone who tells you otherwise. Hang in there.
  9. it seems as though there are a lot of negative nellies on this site. speaking to most nurses in person they are optimistic about the job outlook for rns in canada, especially with the aging populations in canada. keep at it & work hard & i'm sure you will be able to lock down a job.
  10. may i ask which region?
  11. we are always our worst critic. if you care this much, i'm sure you will be fine keep at it & always talk out how you're feeling
  12. i have been reading this site for awhile checking out what nurses have to say about their profession. i am just about to go into nursing school and am so excited to become a nurse and care for others. that being said...reading these forums kills my enthusiasm a bit. is it possible to have a work/life balance and be an RN? i want to be a wonderful, caring nurse however i also want to be there for soccer games/scrapped knees once i have children. from the sounds of the posters nursing is a giant blob that sits on your life & suffocates it...
  13. as of right now (just about to enter first year nursing) i would LOVE to be a public health nurse! ideally visiting new moms. unfortunately that job will probably not exist once i am eligible B.C. cuts back nurse visits to new moms - British Columbia - CBC News
  14. have you worked in a spa before? i have been working as a receptionist at a spa in Canada & the girls who work there are constantly complaining about how they earn no money, their schedules are last-minute & the winters are dead slow. (this may not be a problem in CA haha)i'd go for the esthetician license first and see how you like that before investing in the RN.
