New selection criteria for California Community Colleges

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Hey some california community colleges are undergoing a new selection criteria as follows:

SCHOLASTIC ELIGIBILITY:Scholastic eligibility is determined through a statewide approved formula (California Community College Chancellors Office Pre-requisite Validation) which calculates the student's probability of successfully completing the ADN program. The formula uses the following criteria:

1. Core Biology GPA - all Anatomy, Physiology, and Microbiology courses taken at the college level.

2. Core Biology repetitions - the number of times a student has repeated a Core Biology course including withdrawals.

3. English GPA - all credit English course grades regardless of the level of the course.

4. Overall GPA- the college GPA as it appears on college transcripts.

5. Students must have a minimum score of 75% designating the probability of successfully completing the ADN program, to be eligible for admission.

The question is how do can i calculate for myself to see if im above the 75 percent ?

Does anyone know how to do this?

Specializes in Emergency Department.

I think Golden West College and Cerritos down in SoCal use this and they explain it as a super-complicated computerized algorithm that helps pick their lotteries. So I don't think it's something you could do... but I could be wrong.

I am not sure how it works but I am excited to see they are doing something. I did not get into my community college because they used a pure lotto method. I got into my State College that used merit and everyone in my class graduated. Four people that got into the JC the year I started my State College nursing program failed the first semester.

The critieria you mention are the so-called "Chancellor's Formula." It's being used at a number of California community colleges. San Joaquin Delta College in Stockton is among the school's using the formula.

If you go to the Associate Degree of Nursing pages at the Delta College website, you'll find an online Excel spreadsheet that you can use to calculate your ranking.

According to the local nursing director...

a 3.0 in all 3 categories with zero repeats indicates a 78% chance of success and qualifies you for entry.
