I just got hired in a School Health Nurse position. I am excited and nervous at the same time. I have been an RN 4 plus years and worked in ICU the entire time and some in the OR and as a DON. I love autonomy and I love kids. I believe I will love it. Are you in elementary, middle or high? I hope I love it as much as you do.
;)I am an elementary school nurse. Maybe we can help each other along the way for suppport, encouragement or just to chat. PM with your email if you like.

Well I am officially a School Nurse. I start on Wednesday of next week. The orientation process is basically going to the schools along side another nurse to learn the ropes. I thought there would have been a class orientation regarding policies and procedures. So far they are going to send to me two schools to start out. The first one is 6 to 11 th graders (An Alternative School/Center) and the second one is an elementary school. Anyone work in an Alternative School? I look forward to beginning the job!

Hi -
I am currently enrolled in a nursing program, slated to grad 6/09.
I have about a year experience between LTC & Med Surg as an aide. I am still at a hospital setting. I find that its not for me. I love children & find that a position as a school nurse most interests me. My question is how does one go into that area? I know most don't aspire to go into that direction. How can I line myself up for this? Also switching internally to family center is a no go - as they NEVER have openings.

You are a School Nurse now in Maryland? I'm new to this forum. But I have a job offer in Baltimore and would love to learn more from you. Where are you? In a city? Teach me the ways of this forum. Thanks.

I would like to know where would I go to apply for a School Nurse Position. For both private and public school. Also, what is the average salary range. I have 10 years School Nurse experience in another state. Thanks in advance!
It depends on where you are located. In Southern Maryland we find School Nurse jobs through the Health Department. Charles County Health Dept. St. Mary's Health Dept., Calvert County Health Dept., and PG County Health Dept.
I hope this helps.
Good Luck!
Evelyn
Thanks Evelyn. What is the average salary? I didn't see any salary information on the websites. I want to know what I'm getting into before I decide to make this move.

I was just hired as a sub school nurse as well. I have backround in NICU for 27 years and then on to pediatric home health care since for 12 years. This is all new to me as well. I enjoy learning new things as well. I am so documentation oriented, the system at this school is computerized and that is going to be a bit hard for me to get used to. Some days are so busy I hope I can keep up with the computer documentation. It is hard to go from school to school as some offices are really well organized and easy to just "fall into",but others are so messy and disorganized it will take awhile to get to know my way around. I wish you well as we both start this new chapter.
