New requirements for nursing school

Apparently in an attempt to weed out some applicants and to make more money many schools are changing the admission requirements. Some will accept no transfer credit. Others will only accept science credit that is 3 years old! (Meaning that the credit may expire while waiting to get into the program). The school I was applying to for an ADN will now not accept my over 10 year old credits in speech, english comp, psychology and other basic general classes. You can not take clep tests either. My feeling is that this makes more money for the colleges (you have to retake classes). Also it weeds out many nontraditional older students who have previous degrees or have taken classes over the years. I have been advised that this rule will take effect across my state soon in ADN and BSN programs. I was also told that some LPN programs are beginning to have this rule too. They gave the reason as students having difficultly passing the state board exams. There is no way I can afford in time and money to retake all these classes. It is like 30 credits with a 4.0! I don't know at this point if I should even keep trying at least in this state. I am not able to move out of state. No wonder there is a shortage of nurses.

Kimmy,

sorry to ask but in what state are you?

I think your college took the first prize! Mandatory amount of credits full time! So they don't accept part-timers? Not very adult friendly.

I just hope I finish school by the time olther schools hear this one!

Gosh I paid 6K for my degree in 1986. They told my son his would be around 15k now. AS far as schools trying to generate more money I have always said they make you take some "crap" courses or retake classes you already took just to make money.

This is one of the reasons I decided to go with a BSN program. At our local University, as long as your courses were taken at an accredited school, there is no time limit. I got credit for 9 year old science classes, thank God!

Also, it is a little less competetive to get into this program. It doesn't involve jumping through hoops: personal interviews, references etc.

And YES they are all definitely out to make a buck!

I'm in I'm in Mississippi, unfortunately....As soon as I graduate, I'm headed to California (I'm not from here, my bad luck just brought me here)!

This is EVERY fall semester that you are in the ADN program, even if you have ALL other pre-req's out of the way and nothing else to take but the Nursing Sciences.

I went the other day to register for this fall. This will be my first semester out of the four semester program. Well, I got some advice from a friend of mine that just finished her second semester. She told me just to take basic math online b/c it's so easy and you don't need the added stress of a tough course the first semester. That's exactly what I did. Get this, the counselor tried telling me that I'd probably be dropped from the class b/c I've already taken higher level maths (now they notice....AFTER I paid for and took their college algebra). No where in the catalog or anywhere else does it say that you can not take a course if you've completed a course of higher level in that subject. I figured there would be no way they'd drop me.....They always seem like they're out for money. If they try to I'm going to give em hell! Can't take a lower level class....what's that all about?

The comm college I'm going to (St Louis) for my pre-req's has an allied health program and will not accept math/science >5 years old. As if I'm going to RE-TAKE calculus, gen chem, gen bio, etc! However, I have found that specialized "2nd degree" BSN programs are MUCH MORE generous :D w/ regards to previously earned credit.

I don't know much about programs in Indiana, or if you are in a position to relocate, or even if you are close enough to the border(s) to drive into other state(s), but there are more and more of these specialized programs being introduced. :roll U of Pittsburgh is currently putting theirs together, and U of FL only recently announced the start of their program - I believe the 1st group starts this summer.

Best of luck to you! :specs:
