has anyone heard anything of this new "hopkins" reality tv show coming up this summer on abc? it looks like they follow people at john hopkins to give an inside look at the hospital setting. i'm only worried that they will only focus on the doctors (as usual!). i hope nurses get a fair shake here. the theme song is worrying me...something about "i wanna be your savior..." as if docs need more of a god complex! alas, here's hoping....
Everybody on here blasts the show for not showning nurses, but they arent really showing a representative sample of Hopkins doctors either.
They dont feature a single non-surgical specialty on the show. Surgeons make up a small percentage of total doctors, yet the only docs profiled on the show are surgeons.
Its not a "doctor" thing, its an "excitement/drama" thing and the bottom line is that both primary care doctors and nurses are going to come up short in that arithmetic.
The public is more drawn to the story of a 2 year old needing a heart transplant, instead of a 2 year old admitted for cellullitis and getting IV antibiotics.

I worked for Hopkins for 2 years, and while I did not like my Administrative position, I gained a great deal of respect for the Medical System, it is truely the best. The hospital was founded by a fellow named Johns Hopkins who made a fortune in shipping. One of his mandates was that the system would devote itself to providing care to the underserved, and that philosophy holds true today. Even after I left Hopkins, I referred many Medicaid patients to them because I knew they would receive the care they needed, and be treated with respect. Hopkins has its faults, but delivery of patient care is generally not one of them If I were critically ill, there's no place I would rather be.
