Mugwump had a great idea offering services to new grads as a mentor (thank you for that!)
So, I thought having a "sticky" for new grads, OB nurses, students, and others with questions who want to post these can do so here. We also seem to see many of the same questions over and over, so perhaps this would help serve as an ongoing discussion of common issues/questions we all seem to have on our minds. This could serve not just for those asking directly, but others who may be "lurking" and looking for information or considering a career in OB, newborn, GYN nursing, or midwifery, doula services, childbirth education, lactation consulting, or other related work.
So if any mod thinks this is a good idea, mind stickying this?
Let's give this a go and see how it works out. We have many potential "mentors" here among us who, I am sure, would LOVE to help a new nurse/midwife/doula or student on his or her way to a rewarding career. I know I would love to help out!
I think this idea is great. I am an RN on a L&D floor for about seven months now. I need help finding classes on fetal monitoring in my area. If anyone has any infor on how to locate the classes please let me know. Thanks
About the fetal monitor, do you have someone there to help you read them? Just wondering how that would work when everybody's busy? This Ob nurse told me that was the most difficult thing to really get. She said it just takes years of experience to feel comfortable.
Did you get hired before or after taking nclex? I'm graduating this may and hoping to work in L&D. I have a friend who graduated last month and got hired as a new grad in a L&D. I'm hoping to get lucky too. Would you suggest focusing on the nclex before job hunting?
I am not graduating til May either. I start June 5, before I take theNCLEX. It will be a bit harder but I think its do-able. Plus, that way the hospital will pay for my NCLEX
just wanted to sub to this thread. It is very interesting and helpful with the information. I will be applying to the nursing program in the fall and starting in the spring of 07. I have ALWAYS wanted to be a L&D nurse since I can remember. I can't picture myself working anywhere but there I have a strong feeling toward L&D and cannot wait till one day I will be a RN on L&D.

Hi,my name is Anita-I grad. from RN program last month and took my boards last week and passed :) I started off right after graduation in L&D. This unit is known for it's care of high risk pregnant women-as well for their NICU,and this is where women from other hospitals get transferred to if something "drastic"might happen to her. I hear alot of people saying they dont hire new gards. Everyone told me the same thing about this hospital,but I decided to call the nurse manager to tell her I was a new grad, and would love to work on this unit. I got the interview and the job. The pay though for a GN there-as well as other hospitals is the same as an RN with 6 mos or less of experience.I am currently going through a 3month orientation program-which is starting to get intense Sorry guys, it was a long intro
I will be graduating in May 2006 with an ADN and my interest is in L&D and possibly moving on to mid-wifery. I'm not even sure if I can get an L&D job as a new grad. How much more education & time will this involve??? At my age (43 in Feb.) I don't know if this is feasible. Thanks for any information!!:thankya:

Just go and apply! I will be 37 when I graduate w/ my ADN in May. I just decided that I simply don't have the TIME to do a few years in a field I am not super-interested in (med surg) and I decided to just first apply for what I really wanted--which is post-partum. My logic is why bother applying for what you don't really want--go for what you want and you may be pleasantly surprised! I start June 5!
hi there! i am from syd, down under and i am planning to take the nclex this year. i am currently a stay at mom but i was working as a midwife here. the midwives here i think do the same job and your labor and delivery nurses. my question is :
- it is necessary to be specially trained nurses in L and D to work in the antenatal and postnatal wards there? or can any nurse work in those wards?
i am just wondering if i could get a job (a sponser) in that area, if wei were to move there.

You learn every aspect of nursing , Labor and delivery, acute, med/surg, chronic, pediatric, public health, psych... etc. You do not pick a certain area.

What is your job title? Are you working as a nurse, or an OB Tech?
A description of your specific job responsibilities (i.e., what exactly do you do at work)?
Do you have any special training or background for your position?
I want to become a nurse in which I can take care of the children in te nursery, which type of nursing job is that. I am very confused between a neonatl nurse, maternity, nursery nurse.wHAT TYPE OF DEGREE I need to work in that position. I don't know nay salary or if you know anyone who works in that position to tell me about the type of jobs they do an dif they enjoy it.Please respond ASAP!
