New Nurse- Staffing Agency Requires Level 2 Background

Published

I'm a new grad and I've just passed my NCLEX last month. I'm looking for part time work preferably at a hospital but I'm applying everywhere.

I went to AC Healthcare in Tampa and they gave me a long list of documents that I have to have including a level 2 background check that I have to pay for at $54.

Have anyone heard about this staffing company and is it common to have to pay for your own background check?

Also says I have to have CEUs in

Domestic Violence

Blood Bourne Pathogens

Prevention of Medical Errors

Alzheimer's/Dementia

however, I believe these were included in my degree at my school- community college. I don't have separate CEUS

Should I ante up the $s and time to take these CEUS or should I try to get something from the school stating that these topics were covered in my ASN degree?

Try and speak to someone at the agency to have your questions answered directly. Anytime I have had to do something like that it's just online training required by the agency. Then the agency usually has you sign forms saying that you've been trained in those areas. If they are talking about CEUs that you have to pay for you should be able to get some type of waiver since you received that training in your program. I have worked for several agencies and have never paid for a background check, that is their responsibility along with the drug screen. You will be required to pay for any needed immunizations and certifications like BLS. Agencies usually require 1-2 yrs exp in your specialty area so unless they are placing you somewhere that is going to give you a full orientation as a new grad I would pass on them.

Congrats on passing nclex and good luck with your job search!

Thanks. I'm going to call my school to see if I can get some type of letter stating that the classes were included in my degree.

The agency did give me ceufast.com and rn.org which offers CEUS unlimited for $29.95 and $19.95 respectively so I may use there services in the future.

The background check seems odd that I have to pay!

Unfortunately, I may have to do it as jobs are hard to come by and I suspect even harder for those who want to only work 2 days/part time ugghh!!

For my first job at a hospital, I did have to pay for my own background check, so it's not uncommon for you to have to do that. However, the cost was taken out of my first paycheck--I didn't have to pay upfront. It was around $30.

For my agency job, I didn't have to pay for my background check. Then again, I didn't get my first paycheck yet so I don't know if it's been taken out of that. I shall see in a few days.

I'm interested in hearing about your experience with your agency. I'm a new grad so i'm trying to cast my net far and wide.

They are requiring 7 CEUS based on 4 subjects. I found a $5 coupon and registered with ceufast.com

Just did med errors and working on med errors now. I'm sure my degree/syllabu included med errs, hiv etc and my license was exempt from it first year but this site has unlimited ceus for one year for $29 so on my down time i'm just retaking the ceus, can't hurt right!

I'm trying to get all the other information that they are requiring (quite a bit) and hoping that I get a job not long after I turn in my packet.

May I ask what type of job you got with your agency?
