I recently accepted a GN position. I'm excited about starting the real learning. But I have been thinking... the only thing that kinda makes me feel uneasy is dealing with the doctors. I haven't had much experience with it in school or clinicals. I'm somewhat of a shy person, and I know doctors are humans - not some super species; and I shouldn't feel intimidated... but I do. Are there other people who have felt this way? I feel like a big wimp! Any suggestions or advice?

good morning sam.... I have felt this way when I first was a GN. I have always been very shy. I never use to speak up. So the first time I ever had to call a doc I was so scared. One advice I can give you is always be prepared when calling a doc: such as have pt name, meds, diagnosis, reason for calling. I was a mess I felt everyone was listening to my conversation. I had forgotten to carry my clipboard with me b/c I was running crazy and when I was told the doc was on line one, I ran for the phone and forgot my clipboard. I had to tell him to hold a sec plz. Luckly he was fine with it but that was all I needed. BUt the more you do it you will feel comfortable.
Keep in mind that doc are health care profesionals just like us. Some may treat you different but don't ever let a doc disrespect you. You put him in his or her place. GOod luck and you are not alone.
Sorry English is my second language, forgive my grammar and spelling

You know, I've never been intimiated by doctors. Why should I? Some of them are rude because they feel that they are "better" than any other medical professional. I really think that's because they feel the apprehension from some nurses.
I always hold my head high and treat them the same way I'd like to be treated. Rudeness is ignored or responed with a straight to the point answer.
I will never let anyone intimiate me, especially when it comes to saving, healing, and restoring lives. There's no time for that and the added stress is completely uncessary.
Be proud of who you are. Confident, self-assured, and assertive in your nursing responsibilities. When you radiate confidence and professionalism, others (including doctors) take notice and treat you with the respect you deserve.
Thanks for the input. It was somewhat embarrassing to ever write this thread, but I kinda wanted to hear from others on the topic.
Thanks for letting my know I'm not alone in feeling this way RN28MD.
And thanks for the advice abundantjoy07. I have always planned on being a professional nurse and not being one who jokes and flirts. I want to be taken seriously and well respected. Thank you!
