new to nevada - shifts/recommendations?

ok, i haven't heard from anyone and i work here now in henderson so i thought i would answer myself so it might help someone else. St. Rose is a very nice hosp. it is practically brand new and very clean. they are building another branch of the hosp. on the west side of town. it is supposed to be done by 2006 so there is alot of growth to be going on at st. rose. i started at the imc and will be tx'ing to the icu soon. i work nights and the shift differential is 2 $ more an hr. they occassionally have incentives for working over when staffing is short. there are alot of travelers but everyone i have met is super nice. i love it here. they strive to be a friendly and welcoming hosp. they did just pass a union in the hosp. b/c i think like every hosp. in the area is unionized. from what i have heard from the travelers they say this hosp. it great and many don't want to leave. they say umc valley and sunrise stink. i am very glad and fortunate that i chose st rose sienna campus. they did relocate me from ohio and they took care of everything. it was great. i did get a 1/2 months salary as a bonus which helped with my gas etc. driving my car cross country. i do have to stay there for 2 years and i don't think that is a problem. oh, they are on 12 hr. shifts. write me if you have any questions, i would be happy to help. :)

Hi srenn - thanks for posting a follow up after your move. Very good information. I am entering my 2nd semester of an ADN program (1 sem down, 3 to go), and I have a few questions, if you don't mind.

1. Is it even possible to find a nice home for about 200k out there? By out there, I'm thinking Henderson or Primm. I don't I'll want to live in the City, but on the outskirts. I have read on lvrj.com that housing prices have simply skyrocketed. Will I have a chance, or have I missed the housing boom and find myself with some dumpy property in a seedy part of town?

2. How are things going? Are you working your 12's and liking it? Are there many male nurses (as I'll be one..and no, I'm not gay..haha).

3. Any suggestions while I prepare for the move in May, 2006? Any specific courses I can take that will help me land a job as a new grad?

4. Do you know much about Nevada State College in Henderson that offers an RN to BSN program. (I have a Bachelor's already, but in a different field..yes, I'm one of those career-changers).

That's all I can think of right now. Hope things are going well. Look forward to any/all answers you have for me.

Hello thank you for the info i hope you have more to share, I am a RN in california currently with 1.5 years of experience in postpartum, high risk antepartum, and newborn nursery, mother/baby. I am in the process of endorsing my licence with plans to maove to las vegas, I read that you are at the St. rose hospital, could you tell me about the relocation package that you mentioned of, I am considering calling the nurse recruiter there for more info, how much did you start at hourly, are you still on nights I currently am on nights and would consider staying on nights, my main concern is the pay right now. let me know of any info that you could share, thanks

hi there. i am an rn in ohio and i am moving to henderson nv. i have also practiced in california as an rn. what hospitals do you recommend? i have heard good and bad so far. does anyone have a recommendation? (My experience is neuro trauma) In akron ohio we always have staffing issues and it is very hard. Also which hospitals have 12 hr shifts? how are the icu's? is the staffing bad there too? Does one have to commit to the 2 year payback sign on bonuses. what if you only stay 1 year? What are the shift differentials? I was looking into st. rose system but i think i saw they were on 8 hr shifts? how is the university hosp vs. sunrise? has anyone recieved moving relocation benefits and if so how does that all work? thank you very much for the info :)

I am a diploma grad but have been a nurse 30 yrs with lots of Peds, Level II nursery and maternity. Additionally I am a lactation consultant. I have always wanted to get my degree but will wait till I relocate at this point. How strict are they about their requirement and do they offer sign on bonuses? Thanks for any info.

By the way I am from the Mansfield area.

I'm not sure if any of the hospitals still offer relocation packages for new grads now. There have been several new RN programs that have popped up over the past couple of years. We went from 2 programs to I think its 7 now. Henderson is sort of a suburb of Las Vegas in the southeast. It's nice, taxes are a little higher than LV though. I'd also recommend looking at the Green Valley area (next to Henderson), and Summerlin. St. Rose is a nice hospital system and historically pays the most. New grads are usually 25/26 or so for days. Sunrise isn't that bad. I have actually done a clinical at both Sunrise and St. Rose Siena and prefer Sunrise. Sunrise has a kick butt over 100 bed ICU with separate Neuro, Trauma, Cardiac, MSICU sections if you're into that. I've also heard that alot of people like UMC too so I really think its a matter of personal preference. I think the only one I've heard to avoid is Desert Springs. I'd recommend contacting the nurse recruiters at the various hospitals for more details about relocation.

OMG they would snap you up in a heartbeat! I think all the hospitals out here offer sign on for experienced nurses. Give them all a call and sit back and let them fight over you!
