New and need some direction

Hello all, I recently decided to go into nursing and have thought long and hard about my decision. I graduated in 2004 from Bethany College in WV with a B.A. in psychology and minor in Communications. I currently work at a local hospital in the Psychiatric Unit as a Counselor. I recently talked to an academic counselor at my local community college and discussed the basic and what I need to do in order to get accepted. Since I already have a B.A. I was told that I need to take the NLN entrance exam to be accepted into the program. From what I understand, you can only take the exam once every six months? I was told that the it covers the basic in reading, math, and science, I am really rusty in the math section and need some brushing up in the other areas. Since I only have one shot at this comming up this December or January, I have already began to worry:o. I was going to look at some books or test prep material to assure me I will be ok. Is there any advice that anyone can lend, and maybe some good test prep material. I am looking to gain any edge I can get in excelling in my new profession!

Welcome to the site! You might check out the Pre-Nursing forum for more specific answers about entrance exam prep materials.

Out of curiosity, how did you become a counselor with a BA? Chemical dependency?

Best of luck!

I took the pre-nursing NLN entrance exam...eeek...10-11 years ago! As I recall, it was pretty easy stuff. Basic science and reading & math. Brush up on the basics in those areas (esp. if you haven't had Chemistry in awhile). I wouldn't sweat it too much. I didn't prep for it at all, and scored very high (though I had been working on nursing pre-reqs). I'm sure you'll do fine. Get the study guide if they make one. Good luck! Hope you enjoy your journey into your new career. Your counseling background will come in handy as a nurse! ;)

Actually I am a mental health worker that works with the patients and conduct group meetings so I am basically a counselor without a masters.
