Just got word that I have been selected for the Navy Nurse Candidate Program! Super excited! I would love to get in contact with others. I graduate in May of 2012. Anyone else out there?
GuelRN: I actually asked my recruiter (Chief) about 2014 and he told me that it was also nearly booked since many graduates apply in their junior year of nursing school. I guess we would have been better off if we had applied in 2010! Anyways I also asked about the DA or Direct Commission program and it turns out it is for active duty not reserve like I thought. Since that is the case I may have a small chance of getting in and you might too if you ask for your packet to be sent for DA consideration. Best of luck!
Don't get discouraged. I was in a similar position this time last year. I was first alternate in the NCP. I was disappointed but my recruiter told me not to worry because someone always drops off and he was fairly confident that I would get in. Sure enough in July of last year I received the call that I was in! It happens for DA and the NCP. People change their minds or things happen in their lives or school. I had all but given up and then out of the blue it happened. So don't give up hope.
Delaney: I'm also living in Jax right now. I've only got two more semesters at UNF before I graduate and head off to ODS.
As for why I didn't care for NH Jax (back in 2008-2009)
1) Workplace politics. Lots of it.
2) It was like a black hole that attracted people in the military who wanted to get out or were about to retire. That means a lot of people (but not all) wanted to ride out their time and didn't care about doing their job to the fullest. It made for an unmotivating work environment.
3) The CO was pretty strict.
4) Did I mention workplace politics. Yeah, it was that bad.
My wife is currently stationed there and she doesn't even like it, and she hardly ever complains about anything. Of course, there were people that loved it there, so maybe you'll be one of them. It just wasn't my bag of tea.
Oh yeah, they did do renovations on the hospital. They added a three story extension to the hospital and some other upgrades. They actually started all of that about a month or two before I left for school.

Wow, maybe we've met before at school and we didn't even know it! Oh dear, I requested JAX to be close to my family because my mother is ill, so I know I won't regret it, but I sure hope I don't have the same experiences you described. Is your wife a nurse also? What area does she work in?
Hi everyone! I enjoyed reading your posts about your acceptance to NCP! Congratulations :) I was wondering if I could ask you a few questions about the process?
1. If I graduate in May 2015, when should I start doing my application if I just want the NCP to cover my Senior year of school? Is it best to do it for Junior and Senior year? I had heard that the 2014 was already underway and almost full (word of mouth though).
2. Do you have any advice on how to make the application the best it can be? I don't have any medical experience yet, so I'm trying to figure out how else I can impress the board!
3. Any comments about the program in general and how you are liking it?
Thanks for any and all help! Hoping to get as much research done as possible before I visit the recruiter next month!
CSU,
1. NCP and Navy Nursing in general are competitive slots. I would start as soon as you can, your recruiter will be able to further pin down the time frame and let you know. I contacted my recruiter in 2010, then we reconnected again in 2011 when it was time to submit the packet.
2. My recruiter told me that the motivational statement you write in one of the many forms you will be turning in is one of the most important. It is the one chance you have to put a personal impression upon the board about why you want to join the Navy. He gave me some good tips: officer first, nurse second; tell them what you bring to the table, not what you want from the Navy. It's for the NCP, most people are in the same situation as you so don't feel like you're somehow "behind".
3. I just finished my last classes, but won't actually graduate until December because of my school's wacky graduation/commencement rules. I will be going to ODS in Jan, then Camp Lejeune as you already know So far the NCP has been an awesome program for me. No outside requirements aside from keeping your grades up and collecting that extra stipend! I still worked during school because I did the RN-BSN program, but if you're going traditional route it should be an even sweeter deal for you! If you know you want to join, and can get in the NCP it's really a no-brainer.

I just turned in my application for FY2013 a few days ago.. After reading this I am really discouraged. I did well on my interviews with two o6 nurse corp officers and spent all day at the Naval medical center in San Diego doing my physical and truly believed I still had a shot even though I applied late. (I took 45 days to complete the application). Does anyone know what will or can happen next? Do I get considered for fy2014 or do I have to do DA? Any information would really alleviate my worries.. I am in class and cannot even concentrate anymore haha.
