Just got word that I have been selected for the Navy Nurse Candidate Program! Super excited! I would love to get in contact with others. I graduate in May of 2012. Anyone else out there?
BruniMite: I will be stationed in Bethesda beginning in May. That was my thought also as a reletively new grad...I am grateful for any training and support they want to give me. I started in an OR right out of school and was thrown to the wolves! I am totally cool with 25 weeks of training, although I can understand how it would be frustrating to a nurse with more experience.
Doc: You said your recruiter would have some results by this past Friday 3/30 any word yet on the number of seats left for NCP?
Does anyone know whether the Navy will allow you to come home on a weekend if you are stationed in another state even if you are not on leave? For example, if I was stationed in St. Louis and wanted to visit Chicago would that be against the Navy rules and regulations? Would someone need a pass to leave base? Thanks
BruniMite: The results still haven't come out yet. I probably checked my email 50 times on Friday, but no results. Hopefully by THIS Friday they will come out.
The military's policy on going home on the weekends is kind of a hard one to answer. It really depends on which command you are at because each has their own policy as to how far a service member can go "out of bounds" before they have to fill out a request. Out of bounds is usually anywhere from 100-350 miles. In reality, you don't see too many of those chits anymore. Training commands are pretty big on having their people fill out out of bounds chits, but that's about it. In fact, the only times I've ever filled them out has been at training commands, and that's because they like to keep a tight leash on people. What people usually do at regular commands is just verbally confirm with their supervisor that it's okay, and then go. You just have to make sure you are not scheduled for any kind of duty and that you can get back to the base in time for your regularly assigned shift.
By the way, when I say "training commands," I actually mean military schools, not training hospitals like portsmouth, bethesda, or san diego. Just FYI.
Thanks Doc!I just heard today from my recruiter (Chief) that the next board will be April 11 2012!! Keep your fingers crossed!
Hi!
I just submitted my packet today for FY 2013 and my recruiter said that the next board would be at the "end of the month" hopefully you're right and it will be April 11th! Do you guys know typically how long it takes before they notify you of acceptance into NCP? I was told it would be for sure by August 2012 but reading these posts it seems that you know sooner than that. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for everyone that submitted a packet! :)
So I got word today from my recruiter that....I GOT SELECTED! Stoked! This has been such a long process and it's so good to finally see some results. Can't wait to put on a military uniform...again.
By the way, when I talked to my recruiter she said that the board filled all the seats this last selection process and that FY 2013 is now closed. Just passing along what I heard. Your recruiters may have more details about that.
My recruiter said that I have to wait for the paperwork to arrive (which takes from 1-2 months, from what I hear). Once the paperwork gets here I supposedly swear in on an inactive duty status, and then when I graduate (May 2013) I will be sworn in as an active duty Naval Officer.
At this point I'm just glad I have a job in the military waiting for me after school.
Congrats doc! I also heard that the 2013 is closed. I hope that someone turns their seat down cuz I almost had it! I was a few days past the last meeting in March for turning in my paperwork. Do you think there is any hope for selection? My recruiter wants to do the DAapplication but I've heard reserve is not the way to go cuz switching to active is nearly impossible then.

In the Navy, all you need to do is ask for help and you will get it. The military is HUGE on teamwork and helping out your fellow service member. In fact, NOT helping each other out is actually frowned up.
As far as hospitals and duty stations: I've been to Pensacola, FL; Camp Lejeune, NC; Portsmouth, VA; Guam; Iraq; and Jacksonville, FL. My favorite duty station out of all of those would without a doubt be Naval Hospital Guam. Pensacola was also good. Portsmouth had a nice hospital, but the city was garbage. I didn't work at the hospital in Camp Lejeune, but the surrounding area sucked. Jacksonville was my most recent duty station, and the hospital was nice, but the morale was pretty low and most people hated working there.
I would recommend Pensacola. Actually, I would recommend Guam but you are not going to be able to go overseas for your first assignment.
