New jersey nursing and schooling

U.S.A. New Jersey

Published

Hi, I'm currently taking classes for my RN, i was thinking of finishing my BSN in New jersey, which is where i intend to move to eventually and i have a few questions.

1. How much of a hassle is it to get an admission (I plan to go to Rutgers for rn to bsn), transfer my license to New Jersey to finish up my BSN and is it worth it?

2. Will i be able to get a job as a nurse before my license is transferred incase i need extra money to pay tuition?

3. How long does it take to transfer my license from Minnesota to new jersey?

4. Should i stay back in Minnesota to finish my BSN and then transfer my license and move to new jersey? would that be easier?

Most importantly, i would love for someone to work me through the license transfer process. thank you for your time.

Every input is welcome.. Thank you

You cannot work as a nurse in NJ until you are licensed by the board of nursing. A nursing license is not transferred you endorse your license (you keep the original and gain a second license in the new state with the exception of compact states, NJ is not a compact state) The license by endorsement process is listed on the BoN website. It takes 6-8 weeks to endorse an RN license right now if there are no issues with your background, education or existing license.

You need to look at the admissions requirements, but the RN-BSN program is online only beginning in Fall 2014. I am guessing that you are completing a diploma or associate's degree program in nursing. Hassle is relative what is worth it to one is not worthwhile to the next person.

Most hospitals in NJ require a BSN/RN for entry level positions.

Can I take my NCLEX here in minnesota and opt for my license to be issued in NJ instead of going through the endorsemesnt process? Which process is better?

Also, do nursing homes accept 2-year RN while I complete my BSN?

You need to apply to NJ BoN for a license by examination. You can physically sit for the exam anywhere in the world where it is offered. If you have no intention of ever working in MN, then applying directly to NJ will be more efficient & cost effective.

As far as ADN's in nursing home...it depends. Some prefer LPNs, some prefer RN's, some have the luxury of many applicants so will take RN-BSN if they are desperate enough for a lower wage. But you have a better chance of getting a job in long term care or subacute nursing facility with an ASN than in most of the hospitals. However, there are definitely more applicants than available jobs in much of NJ so your results may vary.

Which do you think makes more sense/is more cost effective? Getting my RN license here in MN and while finishing my BSN (one semester before graduation) I start the endorsement process or Sit for my NCLEX and apply for NJ BON by examination and when i pass, i move down to NJ to finish my BSN with a job in a LTC?

Another option which i do not think is possible is getting my RN license in NJ but staying back in MN to finish my BSN while working as a CNA? Is that feasible?

What do you think?

You cannot enroll in an RN to BSN program in MN without an active MN RN license. NJ license won't cut it.

I would strongly suggest looking for work in NJ and securing a job before moving as many new grads spend 6-9 months or longer searching for a first job, depending on which end of the state you are moving to
