New and issues with coworkers

Hello :)

I have been a nurse for about 15 months and worked in various departments (OR, Med-Surg and telemetry). I finally worked my way into the ER! I Just finished a 6 week orientation and have been on my own a few weeks. I have not felt stressed out about the pace or workflow, but i sense tension between myself and some of the senior staff. There is one particular nurse who is young, like myself, and anytime she works it seems that people who normally friendly to me will ignore me and/or give me the cold shoulder. I am trying not to take things personally. I have always considered myself an approachable person and I wish i knew what i was doing 'wrong". Has anyone had a similar experience? How was your transition into the ER?

Yep...I have. I was on the dishing out end of the "cold shoulder" treatment. I was very young, naïve and ignorant of what I didn't know. I thought I was a real hot shot and the place was lucky to have me. So when other nurses my age showed up, I had to let them know their place and be a d**k to them.

Sounds like that's what is going on. Just ignore the breathtaking immaturity and unprofessionalism, be the better person and move on. They'll come to respect you later. Do not get into a pi**ing match with them. You'll lose and you'll validate the way they're treating you in their own minds. Give it a few months. You'll be OK.

Offlabel,

My level of respect for you has just gone up a few notches.

Thank you very much! I really appreciate your honesty. That made me feel much better. I am just going to continue keeping to myself and offering help to everyone else anytime that I can:) even if I am busy, if another nurse has a critical patient then I am one of the first people in the room.

Yep. Happened to me. Was oriented on day shift and day shift only. Was turned loose on nights, and everyone was so gosh darn clicky. Never got asked if I wanted to order out, had people always talking about going out together while I stood there awkwardly, and overall had certain techs who gave no attitude to certain nurses but when I asked for things, jumped down my throat.

It got less and less as time went by. Still don't really "hang out" with people outside of work but I also got a little more thick skinned that it doesn't bother me so much.
