New imcu nurse needs advice

HI all, I am a new grad and am starting my career as an RN in just 2 weeks time! I am scheduled to work in the Intermediate care unit, and have no idea what to expect. I am so nervous. Can anyone give me any pointers? I know to ask questions (that wont be a problem, I ask probably wayy to many). Any advice or comments would be appreciated! Thank you

I'm working the same (we call it MICA/SICA) as well right now before I go to the ED. It's hectic as hell in my hospital. High acuity, 3:1 pt/RN ratio. Know your gtt protocols or where to find them. Know your charge, PCA's and where everything is in the med room. If your unit has dedicated RT and pharmacy staff identify them and introduce yourself. Find some nurses other than your preceptor that you feel comfortable asking questions to or asking for help from. Be ready to call docs, pharm, radiology, transport etc. Take your time and brace yourself. And best of luck!

And BUNDLE CARE! Get your time management in tip top shape ASAP. Carry a penlight too. I often am doing Q2 hour neuros. Always assess and be ready to assess at the drop of a hat. We utilize SBAR with rounds and MD calls so be ready to have everything you need to address when you call MD because trust me you don't want to be calling 4x because you forgot something else (and they won't want it either lol).
