New Graduate Nurse with 3mo of ED experience

Published

Hello Everyone

I was wondering if I could get some advice here. I graduated from my BSN in Dec 2008 got my RN DC license in May 2009. I Did some PCT work while i was studing for the boards in the ED. Once i passes my manager offered me an RN position as a new grad in the ED. I though i was prepared since i had some experience with the population but i thought wrong. After 3 mo working with the ED i was overwhelmed. Overall i felt like i wasnt fit to be an ED nurse. So i asked my Manager for a possible transfer to a different unit, but there were no opportunities available so i made what i thought was the right decision and my mutual agreement decided that the ED was not best to continue. The manager assured me that i wouldnt have much difficulty finding another hospital position in a medsurg unit. But we were all wrong. There were no New Grad positions available anywhere! Many recuiters thought i was laid off, when i wasnt ... so i scard myself. its been a 1yr since i left the hospital and i still cant find a new grad position! So i accepted a position at an aesthetic dematologist clinic. Not clinical at all... Now i feel ive just hurt my resume even more, but i had to pay my bills and rent somehow. One year no call backs, been to career fairs, nothing has happen. Iam getting very frusturated. Any advice? And iam bilingual SPanish, you'd think they would hire a bilingual

by the way i live in the DC MD VA area

Wow, I am so sorry! I'm having a terrible time trying to find a job as a graduate nurse in the DC/VA/MD area. And I have experience as a CNA, good work history, awards, scholarships, graduated with honors, member of nursing honors society and everything and no luck. I hope we both find something soon! I wish I could of stayined in Missouri all my class has found a job except three of us who moved out of state. It's disheartening!

I feel ur pain! I'm in the exact same boat. Except mine was a med surg floor. I'm sorry to hear that its taking that long. Have u been applying to places outside that area? Or have u considered going back to school?

I know you say this happened a year ago but I'm wondering why your manager didn't try to have you work until something became available. Is there anyway you could've went back to the hospital and attained a new open position now especially if your manager works there and is able to explain the situation to any of the people checking references. And this is gonna sound real bad but have you ever thought not to put down the ED experience, I'm sure all these ideas are late now, but I was just wondering.
