new grads in NYC

I had a position in a private practice and came from out of state for it. Housing is VERY difficult to find if you can't afford 1500/month or want to live in a nice place. I had rented a room in a house temporarily in Brooklyn and was robbed while at work as the land lady showed the room to many people. Couldn't find a safe place to stay til something permanent came along I miss the City.

This is for 4nsickrn I commend your utmost concern and sincere advice in this thread... I am new here in NY just passed the nclex rn and would like to share to you my experience in job hunting... First of all it suck to be rejected over and over again! I have a family to sustain and its just frustrating... You see I've never practiced bedside care in my 9 years of being a RN in the Philippines... I was in pharmaceutical sales because I couldnt sustain my family w/ a salary of a RN (no offense to those who did practice)... I came from one of the best schools and I never regret not being able to practice UNTIL now that I together w/ my family migrated in NY!!! I dont believe it I studied so hard for the nclex rn passed for the first time and now I'm still jobless... Pls HELP!!!:angryfire

I have been looking for a month and a half now and I still don't have a job either. I am a new grad and passed the NCLEX in December. There are a whole bunch of positions at Mount Siani and Columbia Presybeterian Hospital but I have not got called yet. I have been on some interviews and one sad interview was for a dialysis nurse in brooklyn. They were only paying 50K and wanted you to sign a two year contract with them for them training you for 8 weeks. I told them I have a BSN and another bachelors degree and you only want me to get paid 50K and sign a two year contract. It is not always about the money but I think that is just plain ridiculous.

oh my... now i am a bit scared. i just graduated and am still waiting to take the NCLX. i just moved to NY. i had all sorts of job offers in CT where I went to school. I hope that I did not make a mistake by moving here.

I am Dean's List student and Sigma Theta, do you think I will have a problem finding a job? How are they screening applicants anyways? I hate all of those online application submissions. seems like you just get lost in the system...

man i am freaking. can't afford to be jobless long here...

I'm sorry to hear about your current situation. I'm currently a senior NS @ NYU and I have a lot of friends from previous semester that graduated in Dec. 06 and they received job offer from very good hospitals such as NYP, Mount Sinai, etc. before their graduation. So, I'm very surprise to learn about your job hunting experience. I always though it is SUPERRRR easy to find a job especially since you passed your NCLEX already. Sometime, I check the New York Times classified page and there is ton of nursing job out there.

Last month, there was a nursing job fair at my school and all the hospitals in NYC and some out of states are there too. The representatives from all the hospitals and long-term care facilities told us to apply 3 months before graduation and they'll contact us after graduation for interview. One of my friend that will graduate with me in May and she contacted Mount Sinai during winter break for a "informal" interview and a tour of the hospital. Again, they told her to apply around Feb or March via their HR's website.

Have you apply to NYU Medical Center? They hire new NS graduate--Nurse Residency Program. Being a NYU NS, I've tremendous exposure to their hospitals and I think it's a pretty good hospital to work for. Their pay salary is pretty good too, better then $50K.

Hi,

I interviewed at NYU medical center. I called back the nurse recruiter and she said that the area that I was looking for which was postpartum the nurse mgr was still interviewing candidates. So I guess that hospital is out. She did not even offer me any other area. So I got turned off by the whole situation. I had to keep calling them back as well. The only way I got her to call me back was by telling her that I had to give another hospital an answer but I really wanted to work at NYU. Did I really have to lie just to get her to call me back. I used to be a recruiter and the way she handled the whole situation was not good. It seemed as if all my friends that went over there to be interviewed was just lost in the bunch and forgotten about. I have no idea what is going on over there.

I did have an interview at Montefiore Medical Center. I passed the medication test and did the whole application process. I am now just waiting for the nurse manager from a med/surg floor to call me back. I want to be interviewed before the Feb. 5th start date. This is so frustrating. I feel like I am getting penalized because I went to an out of state school. I also feel like there are just too many ppl here in the city and too much competition. That is why I went to a NJ nursing school in the first place because of that. Now that I am done, I can't find a job. This is really making me upset. I have two kids and they suffered enough with me going through an accelerated program and not working.

i know how you feel Lashawn. I'm an out of state applicant as well. I went to school in New Haven. I applied to NYU but it seems that they like to give preference to their own nursing students as I didn't even get called for an interview or anything.

Just keep at it! Have you tried Lenox Hill or New York HOspital Queens? They seemed more responsive to my inquiries than some of the other hospitals I have contacted.

Hello lilnat03 I'm sure there will be a hospital who will hire you. Let me ask you something... Why do you want to move to NY? I mean I would love to move to CT and I'm in NY... If you'll go here definitely you'll find something but it will take time... Competition is at the highest level here I mean there are experienced nurses left and right... It might be better to work there first then move here after you get the experience... Just a suggestion... It will be more practical and easier... Believe me experience is a biggie here! Goodluck and don't let anything get you down...

i am looking now for a job and am having trouble finding a hospital that will hire on permit too. it really is frustrating. most places are telling me to contact them AFTER i get my license. so i havent even interviewed yet. i am a dean's list student and in sigma theta. why is it so difficult in ny?
i am in school in CT and all of my graduating friends have jobs waiting for them already. i was even offered positions in CT myself, but i really want to be in NY.
anyways, i guess i'm just venting. but if anyone has any suggestions about where a grad nurse might look.... thanks very much! i hate to move to ny and be jobless for 2 months until i take the test.

I just graduated from Columbia and none of my classmates had a hard time finding jobs in the city, except maybe the ones who wanted to work part-time, but even they all found jobs within 6 months. I started applying for jobs right after I took my NCLEX and got one within 2 weeks. I think hospitals do have a preference for local grads, probably because they are familiar with the quality of the programs whereas they may have no clue about an out of state school.

I know a lot of nurses working at Monte and they all say it's great. They also have the fourth busiest ER in the country. If I was interested in working in a hospital that's where I would go. Don't get too frustrated, you will find a job and once you have experience no one is going to care what state you graduated from.

thanks everyone for your encouraging words! i do need it. i'm still waiting for my ATT, so i'm just trying to focus on studying and researching hospitals. i did line up one interview so far. we'll see how that goes.

i feel sheepish saying it, but mostly i have moved in order to be with my boyfriend of six years so we can try living with each other before getting engaged and married.. he is a jazz musician and unfortunately his career ties him to the city, whereas i can HOPEFULLY be a nurse anywhere... plus i do love all that NY has to offer...

If you're coming from out of state the NYP hospitals will be your best bet. They hire new grads with limited permits AND they have subsidized housing. Being that you're out of state, you get priority over the in-state employees.

I doubt your problem is d/t you not being local. I came as a new grad from out of state and had absolutely no issues being hired. Did you apply for a NY license or for the license from your state, cuz that could be the problem if that's the case. That would add the extra step of having to endorse to NY state, which can take weeks.

Good luck! I'm sure you'll find something soon enough. It just takes some patience.

Update here!!!

I was just hired at Montefiore Medical Center. I am just glad to start working. I start Feb. 5th on a regular medical floor. I just went through the whole physical thing and I have OSHA training on Monday. This is very exciting for me. I have heard good things about the hospital. I hope what I heard is true!!!!

Thanks for letting me vent when I was down. At least I can start off somewhere and get some experience.
