New grads in the ER?

U.S.A. New York

Published

I'm graduating in May with my BSN from a school upstate and my dream is to go into an ER in NYC. I know this is extremely competitive and that many/most hospitals in NY don't hire new grads into the ER ... I am wondering if anyone know of any who do, or any places within commuting distance in NJ who do? I am already planning to apply to the new grad residencies at NYU, NYP and LIJ. I'm interested to know of any other who might hire new grads.

Also, what can I do to increase my competitiveness? I am doing my preceptorship in a level II trauma ER, which I am hoping may help me out a bit. What units would you consider best to get experience to move into the ER, if that is unobtainable straight out of school? I would love to hear from anyone who was able to do this and how they did so.

Thanks!

GoVeg, we are all in this to give advice to the OP. But instead you are here to say anyone who says a new grad is hired into the ER is wrong and "heard wrong or made up things". These new grads that were hired into ER....i met personally at my orientation in my hospital and my classmates met personally at their own hospitals. Of course no posting will say "new grads welcome" but somehow these new grads are finding their way in. Some were EMTs which is great experience but others were not they just went straight from newly licensed RN to ER new hire. And did not have their foot in the door as a CNA or clerk. I have some of these "new grads in ER" as friends on linkedin. Somehow they got in and the hospitals are not violating a law. How? I do not know but point is....OP , you can apply but it will be challenging to be hired into ER as new grad...but if you dont apply you will never know.

Nope. I'm here to give advice as well and site reputable sources when doing so. I think the quality of advice is much greater when you can actually provide sources rather than just say you've heard things from people. You can find anything you want on the Internet and find people who will say they experienced everything. I simply pointed out that it's important to realize that not all sources (hear-say vs government website) are equally credible. I think that offended you. You seem more interested in trying to just give out unchecked information rather than seeking an accurate answer based on more than just "someone told me".

I personally don't just believe what random people on the Internet say, which is why I discussed this with professional organizations as well as my employer. I would suggest if OP wants an accurate answer, they contact the BON or other reputable authorities and determine why there is a discrepancy in what people say on her vs what is in the law. I bet there is a reason.

And Estrella, I've had many pleasant conversations with you on here but have sometimes seen you act like a bully when not everyone thinks that what you say is gold. Please don't insult me by implying I'm not trying to give advice. We disagree with each other but you don't need to take it so personally or tell me that I'm not trying to be helpful. Thanks.

No one said you are not trying to be helpful. You have one side to give and me and others have another side. I did not discredit you at all. You are the one seeming like a "bully" by saying i am giving false information...that no way what I have talked with people in my orientation (in person....Not the internet!) or my classmates personal experience at other hospitals is true. You have been insulting me...I have been Not been insulting you. You keep discrediting what I have to say...I have met people personally who were new grads hired in to ER without one year hospital experience. I am here to help also and i do not waste time to come on here to give false or unverified info. You said we have to learn to disagree...i have accepted disagreement. I just did not like you trying to discredit me just b/c i shared experiences that did not match The Law you shared. I never said u werent giving facts but there is two sides to give and we must respect each other.

Both of our information, along with the other posters here is valid. LIke I said before, To summarize everything everyone said here....it is possible to be hired in ERs as a new grad however will be very difficult as places prefer people with experience (some stick to that ER Law, others find a way around it...how? I do not know). Dee, can apply to ERs if she wants..theres to nothing to lose. But also should also keep options open to other departments and not rely on ERs alone for her first job.

GoVeg, You just continue trying to discredit things just because its not what is in agreement with what you said. Yes you are offensive when you say someone is giving false info. I work full time and I do not have time nor desire to write untruths on here. I am on here to help just like you, you should be respectful. Yes most places stick to the law others find a way to fit new grads in. No one said the Law is wrong. But why theres new grad hires into ERs still going on ? There is likely some loophole. OP needs to hear both sides.

And the BON can state a Law but the BON does not hire nurses into hospitals. What BON can do is enforce the law and "crack down".

Why the fuss? I think both sides are valid...the one presenting the law and the ones presenting personal experiences. I see the one being insulting is GoVeg, it seems if someone says places dont always go by the law then they are not giving real info. Thats not nice. GoVeg, i did not see anyone being offensive toward you but you do like putting other's advice down. We are all (you, estrella, and everyone else) here to give advice not to discredit or insult other people when their personal experience does not match the Law.

OP (Dee), you can call hospitals (try to get the ER unit, not HR bc HR will just say no) and ask if there is a chance for new grads or not. And apply anyway...nothing to lose i think...as new grads we all applied everywhere including non-ER specialties who traditional do not take new grads and some of us got hired into specialties. You never know what the application reviewer sees that makes you an exception. Also try to app to med-surg too b/c ER is tough to get in, some stick to the law some dont. And not to mention all the people that apply to ER...hundreds for a few positions.

I had 2 classmates I know for a fact that were hired in ED as new grad RNs (we graduated together), one was at an HHC hospital.

Thanks everyone! Didn't want this to devolve into any arguments but I do appreciate the advice :) And I will definitely be looking into HHC as an option when I graduate.

why didn't you accept the offers?

Well I am actually a new grad that was hired into new York health and hospitals as a ER nurse. Just to validate this information it is possible. I hope you found a job!

Thanks! I did find a job, in an ED, coming up on one year :) Hope HHC is treating you well!
