New grad RN Residency in Peds

Published

Hi all! I need advice regarding where to go for new grad RN residency. I am interested working in pediatric hematology-oncology. I have 4 hospitals that I am interested in:

1. Shands Children's Hospital, Gainesville FL

2. Duke Children's Hospital, Durham NC

3. Colorado Children's Hospital, Aurora CO

4. Texas Children's Hospital, Houston TX

I am a UF accelerated student, so I know how it is at Shands Hospital. But I never been to the other hospitals.

So my questions are, if you are accepted to the residency program at all these hospital, which one you will choose? and why?

I am planning to visit Aurora during spring break to check out the city.

Thank you!

I live in Colorado. My daughter has been a patient at Childrens in Aurora and it was a great experience, despite the circumstances. Also, I am a senior nursing student and have had my clinicals there--great experience. So obviously my vote for you is Colorado but I know nothing about the other hospitals. Good luck.

They are all respected hospitals and probably have good residency programs. I would choose based on which city I would prefer to live in.

Given the choices between living in those 4 cities, I'd choose Colorado. Hands down.

Thank you for your comment! I will be going to Aurora this spring break to check out the city and the hospital. Do you think I should contact the recruiter and see if I can speakwith them during my visit there?

Definitely. They probably get tons of applications. As an out-of-state applicant, you would be at a disadvantage. So getting a face-to-face meeting would be a great opportunity.
