New Grad RN - Planned Parenthood

Published

what are your thoughts about working as a new grad at planned parenthood in the surgical setting? There are few jobs out there for us new grads, and if this type of job came up, would you take it? Do you think taking this type of job would hinder chances of working elsewhere due to the controversy this may have?

This sounds to me like career suicide, that's my first impression. Unless of course this is the kind of work you're looking to specialize in (which sounds like it's not). I totally agree with KateRN1, you're better off gaining experience at skilled nursing facilities. I know we're living in desperate times for new grads to find work but you should think of the latent effects this will have on your work profile later on. I'm personally a relatively liberal person but if I was a potential employer and I saw that on a resume it would certainly raise my eyebrow.

majority of the nursing homes/SNFs over here, the RN is mainly the supervisor and doesn't get to do any true "patient care," mostly paperwork and supervision.. I've looked into those as well, It's just so hard right now.. I dont know what really to do. Should I go to the interview and see how it goes?

are there any RNs our there that work at PLanned Parenthood that could offer their insight?!?

My first reaction would be to take the job if it doesn't conflict with your own beliefs and values, and if you are ok dealing with all of the controversy around abortion, and if you want the job. In my mind the people who work for Planned Parenthood deserve a lot of credit. I would check out the clinic pretty carefully, though. Would you have to walk past demonstrators on your way to work every day? What measures do they have in place for your security?

While I respect the beliefs of anti abortion activists, I don't respect for some of their tactics, and I hate to see their efforts at intimidating health care providers rewarded. As far as future hospital work goes, I wouldn't want to work for somebody who prejudged me on the basis of working for planned parenthood. That just isn't the sign of a very good employer, in my opinion. At the same time, you have to live with the consequences, and have to decide if the potential problems are worth the benefits.

Personally I would eat cockroaches and drink sewer water before I took a job with those folks....

That said, I also do not believe pushing my opinions on others and would never be critical of a person that did take such a job.....

I live by my values and have no right to push them on others.....

Peace Out

Planned parenthood does alot more than abortions. They provide birth control, fertility treatment, pap smears, prenatal visits, hormonal replacements, std testing, vasectomies, and general health care like physical exams, anemia testing, cholesterol screening, diabetes screening, employment and sports physicals, flu vaccination, high blood pressure screening, physical exams, smoking cessation, tetorifice vaccination, thyroid screening...to name a few. Unfortunately since most peple do not associate the name with all these great things they do, they focus on the abortions. I think it would be an interesting job, too bad it comes with such stigma. I would at least go on the interview if I were you.

Thanks, I will definitely take on the interview and see where it leads. I spoke with my past DON from nursing school and a lot of other past instructors/mentors, and they said the exact same thing. One use to even work at PP and said they have great standards and that a lot of people in the medical arena do recognize that. I know that PP has that stigma, but I do stand by my point of view and being a new grad, I am definitely willing to take on any experience that I can...maybe this will be a great learning experience!

In some people's minds it only takes one aw shucks (abortion), to cancel out a thousand attaboys (all the other great things you mentioned)......

Charles Manson was a great musician and made some really cool music..........

I am not a religious person. I don't own a bible or a koran.....

However, I am a believer in Natural Law...ie John Locke.......

An animals prime directive is to survive as an individual, then a close second is to perpetuate the species.....

I dont see any other animals having sex for a purpose other than to reproduce......

If there was not such a stigma attached to masturbation then maybe we would not even be having this convo.....

I am not a right wing fruit loop....I certainly am supportive of non-casual abortion ie baby will be severely defective (little to no quality of life), mom high risk and pregnancy could kill her......pregs due to rape etc......

But an abortion because of a drunken one night stand.......that is what adoption is for....

I could never do it. I am all for women's rights. I wish women would choose alternatives to abortion, but I understand that special situations come up. I however could not participate in a abortion other than a woman that came to the E.R. as the result as a bad abortion or side effects of an abortion. The major hospitals in my area are Catholic. A classmate of mine worked at Planned Parenthood in nursing school and had no problem getting a job at one of these catholic facilities.

Honestly, the OP was NOT asking for opinions on abortion or trying to start another abortion thread. Some of the comments I've read are hurtful and extreme. If you don't support abortion rights, that's your choice, but it has nothing to do with whether the OP takes a job with PP. I'm glad that there are people willing to work at PP. Here in OK they provide a much needed service (which doesn't include abortion BTW). The OP is asking for nurses to share their experience. I wish her luck in whatever she chooses.

Thank you okchug.... I didn't mean for this thread to turn into something regarding pure abortion.. Like you said, I am here to seek advice from people regarding PP and any experiences they have heard or have experienced for themselves.

Working at PP will provide valuable experience if you want to get into OB/GYN (as long as its not a Catholic hosp I guess) floor or if you want to go into community health.

When the words Planned Parenthood are said I think it is synonymous with abortion, whether other services are provided or not. I personally would NEVER need work so bad to work there. Anyway, just think about whether you want this on your resume' or not, remember you have to make the final decision and live with it. Good luck.
