New Grad RN moving to NYC from TX

U.S.A. New York

Published

Hi everyone,

I graduate from a BSN program in Austin, TX on April 28, 2018. I am for sure moving to New York City, NY this summer and am actively seeking new graduate nurse residencies in the city.

I have looked everywhere, for applications and hiring events, but I have come up empty handed. Does anyone know anything about New York nursing, for new graduates or just in general?

For example:

- Do I get my license in NY or write in TX and then get my NY license?

- When do residencies start hiring for Spring graduates?

- What is the usual start month of NYC residencies?

- Which residencies in NYC are known to be better?

- Other information you think I should know...

If y'all have ANY information whatsoever, please let me know. I know everything there is to know about the hospitals and residencies in TX, but I feel clueless about NYC. Thanks!

As far as licensing, I have no idea.

However, I can shed some light on NYC nurse pool. I am sure you are aware that NYC is ultra competitive for all RNs seeking a job in the Big Apple. Many to find a residency program, just try to search individual websites of the hospitals you wish to apply to. I know that NYU has a residency program. Presbyterian at Columbia as one too. However, they mostly hire from Columbia SON graduate pool.

From what I can tell NYP has only been hiring new grads who had their clinical rotations there or worked there while they were students. If you have a connection to the hospital that may change things though. They also don't have formal residency programs to apply to anyway. They will hire new grads into specialty areas if the managers are willing to take new grads. Good luck with your job search!

You could get your TX license first then get NY through endorsement or take the NCLEX and apply. Regarding relocating to NYC. Do not come unless you have a job offer. Competition for new grad positions is insane. Even with experience, it's difficult to find employment without connections. I suggest other areas of the state such as Albany, Syracuse, Rochester for now.
