I'm a current new graduate RN (licensed this summer) and as with many others have not been able to find a job. I'm considering going into medical transcription to tide me over as I continue my search. Has anyone else been able to make a successful transition from an MT to RN? Is MT work enough to still keep me relevant to potential RN employers? Seems ideal, as I can work from home and continue my job search. Would love your thoughts or to hear your experiences...Thanks in advance for your help.
Also, is $3000 the norm for MT training????

I have seen less job opportunities for med transcription than for nursing. Any ads at all have required experience. Same as for medical assisting, a job that any RN or LPN could do with a little on the job training.
Oh man, really...thanks so much for your response. Do you think a program saying "job placement guaranteed at end of training" is just trying to hook me in? I'm trying to be so careful cuz I definitely don't want to get scammed...
Any of these programs are trying to hook you in. I have read many times that the transcription courses are way over priced and other negatives about breaking into that line of work. Almost impossible. The wording of the "guarantee" is that they will make available assistance, not that you will actually get a job.

It is very hard to break into medical transcription. I went to school for that several years ago before I became a LPN. Jobs are far and few between and most of them want experience, which you can't get if no one will give you a chance.
While I did eventually find work on a fluke and did transcribe from home for about 5 years... the work dwindled as more and more docs move to voice recognition or the work was sent to India and the like where they can get it done for next to nothing. That is why I eventually went back to school to become a nurse.
Good luck to you and have a great day!

I would agree that it's difficult to get started, but not impossible. Most "work at home" ads I've seen are not very legitimate. Do your homework.
