New Grad RN former EMS experience

Published

I was curious if my 12 years of pre-hospital Advanced Life Support EMS experience would make me marketable to an Emergency Department. I know that a lot of new graduate nurses are saying that they are having trouble finding acute care work right out of school. If you add the specialty element, and it becomes a near impossibility. That is why I was asking the question. I plan to have my ACLS and PALS updated and renewed as well as taking the TNCC course. With my prior EMS experience and obtaining my own specialty certifications....does that make me more marketable to hiring managers in the ED? If anyone has any thoughts, would love to hear......

I think the problem is that certain facilities (the better ones) are flooded with applicants - many who probably have the same amount of experience as you. I didn't catch if you said you are earning your ADN or BSN because that can make a big difference as well. Some rural facilities get fewer applicants, where it definately will catch the hiring managers attention, FYI.

I think you would have a good chance at an ER job. There are plenty of ER jobs available in my area, the turnover must be high. Good luck!

I think it really depends on the market where you are. If you're in San Francisco, it won't likely make much of a difference, but it's always worth applying. If you're in a more rural area, it will likely help. You never know unless you try! :)
