New Grad Residency Orientation Schedules

Hi all,

I am currently in my second semester of an accelerated nursing program. I am starting to consider my career options once I complete my licensure exam next summer. This is a combined program so I will be starting my doctorate's next fall.. just as I will be looking for work as an RN. The problem is there is no part time track for the DNP, however the semesters are only 8-12 credits. This means my school schedule is going to limit my Job Search options. I understand most employers like to train new nurses full time. I have a few years experience working as a PCT so I'm particularly interested in working in a hospital setting, but I'm not sure if my schedule will allow for a new grad orientation. My DNP courses will most likely take place in the day time and there is little flexibility unfortunately.

I'm not having much luck finding information about residency hours online so I'm hoping someone can offer some insight. I am in the Northern NJ/NYC area. In my experience, I have only seen these orientation programs offered day shift Mon-Fri full time for around 3 months. So, I'm curious if anyone has had a more flexible schedule as a new nurse in the acute setting, or if these type of hours are consistent throughout all new grad residencies?

I am located in Virginia, so not specific to your area but all of the new grad residencies I am familiar with are full-time day shifts for at least a few weeks. After the initial training/orientation stuff, people often rotate off to their accepted shift patterns but that first bit is done as one cohort. Good luck!
