New Grad position. It has been 1 month...should I move on?

Nurses Job Hunt

Published

I am graduating in a week with my BSN and I will be moving from VA to MD in order to be with my husband who is in the Navy. For the last month or so, I have been job searching and I am to the point where I am getting anxious about being able to find a job. I know that if I was not moving, it would be a lot easier to get a job from where I am attending school as I have made great connections with the local hospital.

I applied for a nursing graduate position that opened up about a month ago and that starts in Feb 2014. There were 3 graduate positions for different departments and I applied for all 3. I called the hospital prior to the position posting to learn more about the program and they told me to definitely apply since they were looking for BSNs. Early this week, I checked on my online application status and saw some changes - one of the positions pretty much rejected me and it said that they were looking at other candidates who were more qualified. The other two graduate positions that I applied for (same hospital) now say that my application is currently being considered for this position. When I saw that it had changed to this a few days ago, I got excited and attempted to call to follow-up on my application as it has been a month. The HR person told me that nursing hiring manager was not in the office but that I could leave a message - so I did two days ago and haven't heard anything yet...I don't want to try again to avoid being a "pest". So today it has been a month exactly since I applied and other than that status update, nothing has happened. The position does not start until mid February so I am not sure if there is still hope, or if I should just move on?

I want to apply for other jobs but I am waiting for a week until I can finally say "Yes" I have graduated with my bachelor degree on applications. Since I do not have health experience outside of my clinical hours, I am not very marketable until I at least have that degree title.

Also... anyone have any tips on the process of taking the NCLEX in another state from which you currently live? I think I need to change my state of residency...etc... luckily VA and MD are compact states if that would affect anything.

THANK YOU ALL!

Welcome to AN! The largest online nursing community!

Congrats on finishing you school journey!!

If they are compact states you can test in VA and will be licensed in MD

I figured that would be the case but was not sure if there was additional paper work when moving...I need to look up a checklist of what all to do when I am done with finals :) Thank you very much!

If you are a resident of Virginia you cannot apply for licensure in another compact state. After you are licensed and relocate to Maryland you can work for 30 days on your Virginia license. As both Virginia and Maryland are participatory states in NurSyS this should be more than enough time for your Maryland license to be issued; if not you should be able to obtain a temporary license from the Maryland Board of Nursing.

Good luck in your relocation and job hunt, and thank your husband for his service.
