I was currently hired at a great medical center with a new grad residency program. However I was hired part time (32 hours/week). I would really like to be full time. When is it Ok to ask my manager to add more hours in order to become FT? I haven't started orientation on my unit yet, so I dont want to be too eager and ask right away before I have really started working.

You might have to wait until a FT position opens up. You can always try to pick up extra hours here and there but I believe at my work you have to be hired to the position with a certain number of hours.

I would keep my ears and eyes open. Make it a habit of walking by the HR office and checking out the posted openings, as well as checking out the website. When you hear of an opening, pounce on it. Good luck.

At my hospital, you wait for a FT position to open. You can still pick up hours if they need you to though. But plain out going to manager to be a full time employee is a little unprofessional.
