New Grad OB Position

Published

Hi all, I graduated last May with my BSN. I have yet to take my NCLEX (mostly because of lack of funds.) I have just recently applied to a job as a New Grad intern in the Maternity and Birthing units of a really great hospital.

I have been a doula for 3 years, and just recently completed a Certified Lactation Counselor certificate program through Healthy Children Project. In addition, I have a certificate in homebirth midwifery (meaning, I took a year long course in midwifery and graduated from it, not that I have attended homebirths as a midwife.)

I'm also BLS and NRP certified.

I have a great passion for women's health and childbirth.

I was wondering if you all could help me in what I need to do for a possible interview, what else I should do to make myself more desirable?

Any suggestions would be wonderful and greatly appreciated!

Stephanie

Thanks. I know. Like I said before....there are many other factors as to why I have been unable to take NCLEX. I KNOW I have to I WANT to. And No, I took the CLC training quite a while ago. I'm not the only one in my class who hasn't taken NCLEX, it seems to be a norm for my class. Life isn't always cut and dry. Also, a friend of mine who graduated with me just started at the same program i'm applying to. So, it is possible.

I really appreciate all of your help! You all have great advice! Thanks so much!!! :)

also, I AM working right now in a non-healthcare position, to save money to take the NCLEX. :)

i just checked the program's website....and it says "to be considered for the program you must have graduated from an adn or bsn program within the past year." thanks for reminding me to check! :)

That's a good sign that this program is within a year of graduation. Do you have enough to pay the application fee to the board of nursing? It usually takes weeks to months for the BoN to issue an authorization to test the NCLEX. If you can at least say that you applied for your license (then in a few weeks pay the $200 to Pearson Vue to take your exam) that should help your position. My state it costs $200 for the license and $200 for the exam. From day one our instructors encouraged us to put a little aside each month so that we wouldn't have to wait to apply/test too long. (Advice I was glad I heeded since I too struggle financially). Then $25 a week will get you enough money to pay for the NCLEX in 8 weeks. ($50 will get you enough in a month). Most of us can cut out a few treats to save for something so important.

If many in your class have yet to take the NCLEX having at least applied to the BoN should give your application an edge.

Thank you so much! Yes, I have been saving. I have $100 so far, and will get another $100 next week...Then I will send in the info to the BoN! :)
