I'm a new grad nurse moving from NY to Austin.

I was wondering how are the nursing job opportunities look like for a new grad in Austin?

Any advice where to look? Which hospitals hiring and which hospitals are the best to work for? ( i would prefer a med/surg position in a hospital setting with great orientation and preceptor)

Seton looks good but they not hiring new grads till Oct. Anybody know if Austin State Hospital and St Davids hiring?

ASH is usually hiring, but I wouldn't want to work there. I consider Seton > to st Davids, but seton is also catholic. I had to look in San Antonio, but I wanted a specialty position. Afaik anyone who git hired for June in austin was VERY lucky. Boh seton and st davids are both on hiring freezes. To work at seton you have to do their versant residency :. Start in oct. Thanks. Here in NY is really hard to find a job for new grads. Hiring freeze all over. I was hoping to have better luck in Austin. Or even better, I have to get a job ASAP, as soon as we get there. I cant wait till Oct for now. Maybe I could just start somewhere , anywhere for the time being and still look around.

My hospital is hiring, in downtown san antonio, baptist medical center. It is approximately 1:15 minutes from south austin. You may be able to find a clinic or dr.s office, but i'm pretty sure that st davids is on a hiring freeze and seton until oct, when the new versant cycle starts.

others i know have looked in san marcos at central texas medical center (approx 30 mins) scott & white in temple

hill country in fredericksburg (nearly 2 hours) , college station, round rock, bastrop, marble falls. Anyway, if you want to chat, pm me and i'll pass you my number, its so much faster to get all the info in a phone conversation, or chatroom, these forums are quite slow :)

Hi, I am also trying to relocate to Austin as a new grad. I am new to this website, but I really appreciate all the info so far. Does anyone know if you can work as a CNA or LVN with an RN? Thanks

I'm in a similar position as you. I moved here from another state to start the Masters program at UT. From my advanced clinicals I've had the best experiences at St. David's Hospitals or Brackenridge (Seton hospital). The vibe at the other Seton hospitals, in both med/surg and women's services where I specialize, is not happy. I think it may be the design of the floors or the mix of staff, but they just don't seem to like each other. Austin State Hospital I wouldn't touch with a 10 ft pole, but they always need nurses for that reason. Yes there's a hiring freeze, but all the hospitals are hurting for nurses. My peers working the floors are fed-up with the understaffing.

Unless you have some solid tech experience, EMT experience, or you know somebody.....getting a job will be tough. As far as ICU goes, unless you have the above mentioned experience, kiss your chances good bye. Seriously! Its depressing but the sad truth.
