Hi all,
I am a newly minted BSN graduate from a nursing school in NJ. I graduated about 3 weeks ago. Lately, I have been applying for positions all around NJ and the NY area. However, my dream, ultimate dream, is to work in NYC. I have been e-mailing and applying to NY hospitals for the past 2 weeks and have landed interviews.
My concern is that I have applied to the NJBON to sit and take my NCLEX, which is still in process. Recruiters/HR request that I bring my license with me to the interview. In my cover letter I mentioned how I will be taking my NCLEX this summer etc (hopefully by end of July or no later than August, depending on how quick NJBON processes my app).
I am a bit concerned because I just freeze up and don't know how to reply back to them, esp. since I'm sitting for my boards in NJ. I want to tell them that I'm taking my boards in NJ where I reside, but am going to endorse for a NY license once I pass my exam...there is also something called "Reciprocity," which I definitely plan on doing. I know there are educational reqs that need to be fulfilled in order to be licensed in NY, such as the Child Abuse and Infection Control courses.
Can anyone please share words of advice, or has anyone experienced this/is going through this now? How did you go about doing this? I'm not sure about the exact steps that I need to take in this process... I mean, I've been doing research online, but I would like some advice/input.
Should I wait til I take the NCLEX in NJ, and then start from scratch and apply/fulfill requirements to have NY license? Should I begin the process now to obtain my NY license, while I wait for NJBON? I do not have to retake the NCLEX again right?
Please and TIA everyone. God Bless. Sorry for the essay! Lol!

Why didn't you apply for an NY license initially since your goal is to work there? I graduated from college in PA and applied for MD license but I was actually hanging out with family in NJ when i took my boards. You don't have to apply for license in the state you live in when you graduated. Otherwise, I'd have applied for a PA license initially. I didn't apply for a NJ license when i graduated because I heard their board takes a long time. The problem here is that you're going to have to wait to get your NJ license and then apply for endorsement. NY does license by endorsement, MA does license by reciprocity. Reciprocity is a lot easier as than endorsement. Don't forget that if you didn't go to school in NY, you have to take those 2 courses when you apply for endorsement. You have about roughly 4-5months ahead of you assuming you just submitted your stuff. I heard NJ can take up to 3months to process. NY takes 8-10weeks for endorsement. You should get your license a few days after you take your boards.
When I spoke to the hospital recruiter, they asked me when I submitted my application for endorsement. I think they want to know when you're available to start. Depending on when they need you to start, that may hurt your chances assuming they have someone who doesn't have to wait too long to get a license. I say be honest with them. if they really want you, they'll wait (assuming you stand out). Remember, there are so many grads out there.
I'm not sure if you can cancel doing the nclex for NJ as your initial state and applying to NY instead. That'll cost you money. Currently, hospitals are looking to wait about 8weeks after July before you can start, assuming you take it end of July as you stated. I've seen a case here on AN where someone wrote it took about 6months from application to start working at a certain NYC hospital so you may be fine.
good luck.
Thanks for your comment. Very helpful. Could I begin the endorsement application for NY, even if I didn't take my NCLEX yet? Or do I have to wait til I take it and get my results? Also, for the courses that I have to take, can I take them now or do I also have to wait? I know, I applied to NJ because in case I wanted to work in NJ and applied to hospitals in NJ.

Had you graduated from a NYS program you could have had an 90 day limited permit. Don't know if you can begin the endorsement process yet because you don't have a vaild out of state license yet.
i think you must have a license to endorse because the form requires you to put down your license #. Plus you have to do the NURSYS verification unless your state doesn't use Nursys at which point you'll have to fill form 3 and submit to your board to verify your license. The courses are easy and only take a few hours to do. The child abuse one took me about an hour because it's so specific (I speed read) but the infection control was more commonsense nursing knowledge. Don't worry about the courses for now.
Right now, I say focus on passing the nclex. There is no need to stress yourself out right now.
Yesssss, that is exactly what I thought to myself. I need to take things one step at a time. First stop: Passing the NCLEX!
