New grad moving to Philadelphia?

Hi!

I'm about to graduate with my BSN in May and I'm considering moving to Philadelphia. I was wondering what the job market was like in Philadelphia for new RN grads?

Any info or tips would be greatly appreciated! I'm from georgia, newly single, and ready for a change of scenery!

Horrible. It's a really, really tough market for new grads. There are tons of schools in the immediate area so there is a glut of new grads (BSN, ADN, Diploma, the whole shebang). It's harder if you do not have a BSN but it's still pretty hard WITH a BSN.

I would not recommend moving here without a job already lined up. I don't know what the market is like in Georgia but you might do better to get a job there, get 1-2 years experience, and then come to Philly.

Yea, that's what I had sort of gathered from the postings on here, but I was hoping that maybe it had turned around. I'm definitely going to apply and see if something comes of it, and if not, give it a year or so and then try again.

It's definitely better than it used to be, but it's still a rough market. If you move here after school you want to be able to support yourself for at least 6-8 months of job hunting and have a backup plan for when it takes you longer than your savings to get a job.

I'm an Lpn grad who hasn't even gotten an interview in Philadelphia.I volunteer at the hospital & RNs also volunteer in order for an opportunity for a job position. Most cities/town outside Philadelphia,you may have an opportunity to get a job,but in Philly its a small chance.

Don't even bother moving here.

Job market is absolutely positively terrible.

You are basically asking to be unemployed for a year minumum unless you actually know someone who can give you a job.

Unless you absolutely love Philadelphia and don't mind working as a bartender while your license and degree go to absolute waste, save yourself the trouble.

Philly is ground zero for "It sucks to be a new grad"

Well it's now July 2012 and NOTHINGS CHANGED. I've had my LPN license since may. I've been looking mainly in the philadelphia suburbs. I've applied to around 30 places so far and I haven't gotten a response from anyone. I really feel like I wasted my time and money on LPN school. It would really be great if schools had some type of job placement assistance.

When I get people going for an LPN I tell them to consider an RN. LPN jobs are vanishing. I hope you find something.
