New grad Med-tele vs GSU

Nurses General Nursing

Published

Hello everyone, I am kind of confused about which position is best.

My ultimate goal is to work as an ED or ICU nurse full time and per diem or part time as a flight nurse.

I have an offer from a Level 1 trauma center for Med Tele and a Gen Surgery Unit in a community hospital associated with a level 2. Both are not in California.

My question is which one would be better suited for my path? I really like the Med Tele, but it is 10 hours away from family. The GSU is just 2 hours away from family. Money isn't really an issue. I want a position where I will learn a lot and do a lot as well as look forward to work, work with great people, and get me set up for what I really want to do.

Any outlook, input or advice is welcome!

Thank you for your time!

Specializes in Family Nurse Practitioner.

The Med/Tele job will give you telemetry experience which will help if you transfer to ER or ICU.

However, you will learn a lot on General Surgery. I went from General Surgery/Ortho to the ER. It is doable.

If being so far away from your family will be stressful, then maybe it is better to take the closer job.

Level I vs Level II trauma, I have no experience with since I do not work for a trauma center. (I'm not a huge fan when we do get traumas either way).

The most important thing to have as new grad is a supportive environment, no matter the specialty.
