new grad may 2009..possibly relocating...need advice

U.S.A. Pennsylvania

Published

Hi,

I will be graduating in May 2009 with my RN and was considering relocating to Philly. I currently live in Mass and would love to stay but the job market is not so hot right now. I am wondering what are good hospitals for new grads in Philly to work at and what the starting rate is. Also hospitals that offer some sort of loan reimbursement would be a bonus. Lastly is moving to Philly a good move for a single 20 something is it a fun place. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. THanks

What hospitals in NE Pennsylvania? I can't find anything, so any tips would be helpful. Thanks!

Gogatsby, I posted the answer to your question on the first page of this thread, there are more, but these are a few of them..

I live up in Northeastern, PA between Scranton and Wilkes-Barre, I don't know if you'd be interested but the hospitals up here are always hiring RN's if you're interested a couple you can check out are:

Wilkes-Barre General Hospital (Wilkes-Barre)

Moses Taylor Hospital (Scranton)

Mercy Hospital (Scranton)

CMC *Community Medical Center* (Scranton)

Geisinger (Danville, Wilkes-Barre)

VA Medical Center (Wilkes-Barre)

Kindred Hospital Wyoming Valley (Wilkes-Barre)

First Hospital Wyoming Valley (Kingston)

Search those, you may have to include the city and state but you can check out their employment opportunities and the cost of rent isn't really TOO high around here either.

The valley I live in is pretty boring, not gonna lie, but there are nursing jobs available! ... What about travel nursing?

I adore my job at Geisinger. The area is boring like no other, but the system offers sooooooo many options for a new grad, plus the cost of living is cheap and they pay well so it's easy to save up a lot of money real quick. :) My husband, who is a full time student, and I live off my pay alone and we always have plenty of spending money in the bank. :)

Hi,

I just graduated last week and saw your post and thought I would ask if you are working in any of the Scranton/Wilkes Barre hospitals? I have an offer at Mercy, but not sure about it. Do you know anyone who works there? Do they like it? Thanks, Diane

Philly is a great city, but the nursing options for new grads are pretty bad here. Personally, I love Boston, and would move there is it wasn't so far from family and so darn cold. Unless you are heart-set on Philly, I'd look somewhere else.

I just wanted to reinforce what was said above. I graduated in December, and I just started a job in May about an hour northwest of Philly. I REALLY wanted a city hospital (HUP, CHOP, Jeff, St. Chris, Temple, etc), but there are NO new grad jobs in the city. I applied to over 150 jobs and had two interviews. One was at Jeff, and when I arrived they were like "Oh, we didn't know you were a new grad," and the other one is at the hospital I'm at now. It's not easy for new grads right now...good luck!!

Yeah, I'm hearing a lot about new grads not being able to find jobs too but it really does DEPEND ON WHERE YOU'RE LOOKING! That seems to be the trend hands down. That said, here in the Raleigh/Durham area I've been hearing it's not that great for new grads either. Just figured I'd put that out there since this area is normally ranked well nationally when it comes to nice places to live. I think if you're willing to go to not-so-congested areas of Pennsylvania then you'll land a great job, get a year or two experience under your belt and then go for the move to Philly (if it still seems attractive for you).

I grew up in Jersey and went to school in PA and then worked in Philly for a number of years. It's not a town for everyone but it's a vibrant city where you can allow it to make you or break you ;) for lack of better words

Good luck!
