New Grad May 2014 No Job

U.S.A. New York

Published

I graduated in May of 2014 and am looking for a job in Brooklyn. Any long-term care facilities that hire new grads with zero experience. I have never done a CNA job or anything, no volunteering. I wish someone would have told me in nursing school how important it is because I feel like all the CNAs get hired through internal hospital applications.

Thank you!!

Depending how the interview goes they might? How long until you heard back from them? And are you also a new grad nurse?

I graduated May of 2014 so I am not sure if I am still considered a new graduate nurse but I am afraid I wont even get a volunteer position at NYM. What types of questions will they ask?

Check out Volunteer Programs at New York Methodist Hospital . As per the website, most programs are currently full so that may be why you are not accepted. Also, my friend volunteered for NYM in 2012 as a new grad RN and as per what the director of volunteer programs told her, the only program that accepts new grad RNs as volunteers is the Mother Baby Ambassador program. The other programs require minimum 6 months commitment so only current students , retirees , or others already employed as RNs or health care field are chosen. This is because they know new grad RNs will leave the volunteer position as soon as they get an RN job and therefore likely the 6 months commitment will not be completed. The mother baby ambassador does not require X number of months commitment. Any volunteering is valuable though. And maybe you will be interested in OB.

I volunteered for 6 months before being hired. Another girl I know only volunteered for 3 months, but she was hired 2 months in. It depends on what units are hiring. Interview was good, and the interviewer is very nice- why do you want to volunteer here? Tell me about your health care experience.

DO NOT say that you are volunteering because you hope to get a job there. You must be volunteering because you really want to and because NYM is a good hospital!

(Although they say they require 6 month commitment, if you get a job there, they will release you from that commitment early)

I got a job after about my 300th application and even then it's abt an hour commute time.. Maybe look in other cities that's what worked for me..

may i know which unit did you volunteer at? I volunteered for > 6 months in the ER department, however I never really had the chance to speak to the Nurse Manager on that unit, since it is so busy there, but I still enjoyed my experience volunteering in the ER since the staff was so nice there. Now that I got my RN license, the volunteer coordinator told me I could not continue volunteering in the ER, however she offered to place me in the mother/baby ambassador volunteer position. I am wondering if this is a good unit where I can actually interact with the Nurse Manager and the staff. or should i ask to see if she can place me in another unit?

Thank you for your advise!
