New grad+maternity leave

Hello,

I graduated nursing school Dec 2012 at 6 months pregnant. I got a job doing flu shots/corporate health screenings. I also did some home health for 8 months but I didn't really feel comfortable out on my own as a new grad with next to no training. I got pregnant again and haven't worked for almost a year.

Have I committed career suicide? I only want to work 2 days per week (swing shift would be ideal) but I don't feel as confident in myself. I would want to have a good training period but cant seem to find a job that fits the bill. What would you suggest? Any areas I should search?

Obtaining a part time job in acute care without any relevant experience is very unlikely to happen. The transition period - to become fully competent in acute care - takes time. If you are only working part time, it will take twice as long. It will difficult to find a hiring manager who is willing to keep you 'learning mode' for a lengthy period of time. In my organization, all inexperienced new hires must commit to working full time until they have achieved all orientation goals & that usually takes 12 weeks or so.

I never got a job in acute care & then I took a year off to raise my child. I had been looking for jobs but since I took a year off on-top of not having acute care experience, no one will hire me. So I made the decision to go back to school instead.

all you can do is apply to everything and see what you can get. I don't think you ruined your chances at getting a job. I think you just have to apply everywhere and see. I thought I ruined my chances of getting a job, but I am getting interviews and have been considered by good places. Expect things to move slowly and do not be impatient. I am sure you will get a job but it could take a long time so just be patient!
