New Grad in MA

Published

I recently obtained my BSN and hold a current Massachusetts Registered Nursing License. I graduated from the University of North Florida and now live in Roslindale, MA. I am willing to commute and basically work anywhere in Massachusetts, preferably within a hospital setting. I have applied to over 100 positions and have had no luck. I feel that my resume is impressive other than the fact that I have no experience yet as a registered nurse. I have no other choice but to live in MA, so relocation is not an option. Please, Please, PLEASE... I am looking for some advice here! I have looked into Nurse Residency Programs as well and have applied to one at UMass Memorial which begins in 2015. I know the Baystate applications are not available until late November but I will be on the lookout for those as well. I am really looking for advice on how to get interviews with hospitals, other than putting in applications and being persistent with HR. I have only been applying for jobs for about 5 weeks, but I am hoping to find some luck soon. Any suggestions would be amazing! Thank you!!

Have you applied at clinics, LTC, rehab, etc?

Try applying to Vibra Hospital. They have a few in MA. A friend of mine worked at the one in Worcester for a year and then easily got a job at Hartford Hospital in their ED. I think the hospital is an LTACH. She said it was a tough place to work but good telemetry and vent experience. Aside from that I would recommend applying to all of the nursing home rehabs or a place like Healthsouth. Many of the smaller places might not let you apply online and will require you to fill out an application in person. A rehab will give you less acute med-surg like experience that can help get you some decent experience.

Even if you want to ultimately work at a hospital it is a good idea to have a backup plan.

I have not yet applied to clinics but I have applied to ALFs, nursing homes, and rehabs. I did hear back from a life care center of America but they wanted me to come in that day and I was still in Florida at the time and I don't think they were willing to wait a week for an interview. I am really willing to work anywhere if I cannot get into a hospital. I will have to look at some clinics!

Thank you so much! I have not heard of Vibra. I just looked them up and it looks like they have a few openings. I will be applying for those positions tomorrow:) Do you recommend going into these places and handing in resumes and introducing myself to nurse managers after applying online?

It never hurts to call to check and your application! Good luck.

NicoleLaudato --- I was curious if you applied for the new grad program at UMass? Any luck?

Yes I did apply, and I received a phone call today that I have not been chosen for the program, however they recommend me getting 6m experience in a nursing home subacute care, then I will more than likely get a job there! Good news is I just accepted a position on a subacute unit at a nursing home :-)
