New Grad LVN Houston, TX

U.S.A. Texas

HI everyone,

I'm a new nurse in Houston Tx. I just wanted to share my experience so far. My first job was with a home health agency that likes to hire new grads. My pay with them varied depending on the case. If the case was low tech, meaning the patient didn't have a trach or G tube the pay was $19. If the patient was high tech it was $20, and if it's over night $21.50. The cases vary and are not a regular monday through Friday and mostly 12 hour shifts, but some were like 8 hours. I work at a rehabilitation center that pays $21 hour 12hr shifts. This is more stable I won't lie it's not well organized when it comes to training but I make good money. I just wanted to share my experience with those that were interested.

thanks for sharing!! I'm considering a move to Houston after I graduate, & this is exactly the kind of info I was looking for.

Specializes in M/S, LTC, Corrections, PDN & drug rehab.

So the first job was pediatric private duty? Honestly no new grad, LVN or RN, so work PDN.

Yes private duty nursing.

Yes private duty nursing.

There are many posts in the PDN forum about why it is not for new grads. I don't care if you passed school with all As or just scraped by, passed the NCLEX on the first try or took 3+ takes. No new grad should be working HH/PDN as their first job. Go check out the PDN forum.

I wasn't asking for your opinion on it. Keep your negative opinion to yourself. Training was provided and help is there if needed. If the agency doesn't want a new nurse they won't hire them it's that simple. Some do others don't. We all learn somewhere. And no one was referring to school. That part is done.

I'm telling you straight, any HH/PDN agency that hires a new grad is doing you a disservice. They will hire anyone with a license an a pulse & I'm not the only one who has said this or had experiences being a new grad. The agency doesn't care about you, they care about themselves.

I was talking if you were an A+ student or a C student, it didn't matter what grades you made or how many attempts on the NCLEX. No one should be in HH/PDN as a new grad, ever. Check out the PDN forum if you think I'm wrong.

Specializes in Critical Care, ED, Cath lab, CTPAC,Trauma.

I think we need to consider that there are different levels of knowledge and experience for each individual. There are new grads that are perfectly capable of private duty and agencies that provide support. I personally believe that new grads should get some experience before they are on their own but that is between the nurse and the agency.

Her at AN we strive to be supportive.
