New grad looking for work in San Diego...

U.S.A. California

I passed my boards a month ago and I'm still looking for work. I externed for a year and apparently the hospital at which I worked has a hiring freeze. I am extremely concerned about how long I'm going to be out of work given that I am a "new grad" and they only start the new grad positions 4 times a year. The hospitals that I have spoken to so far have informed me that they have are hired up through the rest of the year. Does anyone have any insight on getting a job in San Diego? :banghead:

Thanks!

You must be in north county. You will have to go south if you are. PPH is very difficult to get a job as a new grad and Tri-City has the hiring freeze. Sharp usually starts listing their new grad positions around now, keep checking daily. Scripps usually waits a bit but check their site daily as well. I hope you find a job soon!

The same thing is happening to me in Phx. AZ. I just graduated and no one has called me back. Taking by boards today. My sister is a nurse and her manager told me that he couldn't hire me because the hospital will only hire Apollo College new grads first and then if spots are open, they'll hire new grads from other colleges. What a slap in the face. There a too many schools for nursing here, and the hospitals won't fill the open positions with new grad RN's. But yet it's on the news that there's a shortage of nurses here. Thought about moving to another state, but it seems that in CA, AZ and CO it's all the same. No one from Vegas called me either. My wife is in allied health care and the hospitals hired her right away. There is no new grad discrimination towards non-nursing professions. Good luck to you all. Things will get better for us.

Hi, I'm new to this Forum, but I just ran across your post. I was reading your post and felt like I had written it myself. I moved to San Diego in August, I have my license already, and I have been having a difficult time finding work. It seems like everyone is being extra picky with who they hire. It doesn't seem like anyone is willing to train. I have been a nurse for 3 years, 1 in ER and 2 in Case management. Where do the new nurses usually get hired? You mentioned something about San diego only hiring new nurses 4 times a year, when exactly is this? I may have to be hired on board with this group. any bit helps, right now I'm running out of hope.:banghead:

Try the nursing homes. They're usually always hiring. With the way the economy is right now you really can't be too picky. Good Luck to you all.

New Grad hiring comes and goes in waves... I know that it was frustrating for me at first... and even more frustratingly so, most of the offers came AFTER I already accepted my current job (which I truly am thankful for; I've been learning a lot, and everyone has been extremely helpful where I work).

Keep on trying... and don't wait to be called: call recruitment, try to call the nurse manager, etc. The jobs will come in time. I know we just hired a group of new grads where I work, so it might be awhile before another new grad group starts (maybe spring of next year).'

Good luck!

Paradise Valley Hospital in National City is hiring nurses right now, both LVN and RN's. Check on their website for all the positions available. They don't have a new grad program but they will hire you and just train you. They are looking to train RN's for ICU and ER right now too and telemetry is looking for more. Good luck to everyone looking for a job! You are welcome to PM me anytime :)
