New grad looking for a job in California

U.S.A. California

Published

Hi! I am considering moving to California after I graduate in May 2010 from the University of Florida with a BSN. Lucile Packard Children's Hospital caught my eye and I would greatly appreciate ANY information you have! How hard is it to be hired as a new grad, how many people are accepted into the Versant RN residency program, ect? Thanks!:D

I worked with some travel nurses who stated that Texas didn't have nurse:patient ratios. I'm unsure if that's still going on but that's what she said. If you can land a job in Texas that would be great GO FOR IT!

Specializes in Case mgmt., rehab, (CRRN), LTC & psych.

Texas does not have nurse/patient ratios. Nether does Nevada, Arizona, Oregon, Washington, New York, Florida, or the overwhelming majority of the states.

California is the only state in the union that has legally mandated nurse/patient ratios for acute care facilities. The other 49 states do not have ratios.

and then there's the feds. even in CA, the VA doesn't have ratios, the way I understand it.

Specializes in Ante-Intra-Postpartum, Post Gyne.

My friend got a job there in the PICU. She was an exceptionally excellent student with a near perfect GPA, graduated with honors and is a member of Sigma Theta Tau, did two extra preceptorships, one she set up herself in a NICU and one she did an entire summer long at the PICU in the Mayo clinic in MN. Packard is a top hospital, I expect they would only taken top graduates; especially in this economy.
