new grad jobs

Specializes in Family Nurse Practitioner.

I was offered a job on a medsurg floor at work a couple weeks ago. Today I was offered a job in the OR. I have been a scrub tech for 20 years. I have no idea what to decide. If I ask the OR they are insulted I would leave, if I ask a medsurg nurse they all say get medsurg experience. I can't really discuss it with coworkers. I'm shadowing both floors next week. Any thoughts advice suggestions to consider?

Where does your heart lie.....where do you want to be.

Where do YOU want to go in your nursing career? Don't worry about other's, this is your career and you need to go where you heart is set :) Good luck.

^^^^agree! Shadow both departments as planned and go from there. This is your job so don't let anyone decide but you!

Did you enjoy the med surg floor during clinicals? How. Hard would it be for you to get back to the OR if you go to med surg and don't like it? Are jobs scarce in the OR? I've even a scrub for 5 years and can't imagine being anywhere but the OR but that's just me. I'm planning on staying in the OR when I graduate. And think if the how versatile you would be in the OR. Being able to scrub and circulate is a major plus!

I want to do both!! I am going to shadow in both areas but I am leaning towards trying something new. aubgurl I know exactly what you mean about the OR.

Congrats on the job offers! I suggest shadowing both jobs and journal instantly after shadowing. After reflecting upon those experiences make a list of pro's and con's for each position. Try and envision the long term. Trust your instincts. :)

Congrats on the job offers, and I agree you have to trust what's in your heart.

Ask youself tho, would you be picking the OR job becuase it is comfortable and you are more familiar with it? If you truey love it, go for the OR job! I am a firm believer that life begins ourside our comfort zone.
