New grad hoping to move to Chicago

Published

Hi Everyone -

I have been searching around these forums a lot throughout nursing school, and today I thought maybe I could use a little help.

I'm graduating in May (yay!) from nursing school with a BSN. I live in Kansas City now, but I'm moving to Chicago if I ever get a job. Therein lies the problem.

I have applied at quite a few hospitals, but I'm just not hearing back from places yet. I'm learning now that while there is a nursing shortage, hospitals really aren't all that eager to bring on a whole bunch of new graduates who they have to train completely. I just thought it'd be a little easier for me because I'm pretty flexible about what I want to do - I'm willing to work nights, in fact I want to work nights. I'd like to start out in Med/Surg, but there are only a few areas I wouldn't want to work in.

I just really don't know what to do now, and it is really really starting to worry me that I have no job and no prospects.

I've applied to Rush, Northwestern, University of Chicago, Lincoln Park Hospital, Advocate Illinois Masonic, and I think that is it. Does anyone know of other hospitals (that wouldn't be impossible to get to from Lakeview with no car) to apply to?

Any advice is greatly appreciated - I'm definitely into freak-out mode now.

Have you called them?

HI, Have you applied at St. Joseph Hosp., Rehab institute of Chicago? There's so many to choose from depending on where your staying. There's so many hospitals on the northside of town and suburbs. I live in south suburbs, so I work close to home. Hope you hear from someone, because there always recruiting new grads while in clinical rotations towards the end.:nurse:

Noviciate - thank you so much! That's just what I needed - it is kind of hard to figure out about the smaller hospitals in such a big city when you're not from there. I applied to a few of those and already heard back about an interview from one place - so really - thank you sooo much.

Hi! I am a senior nursing student hoping to move to Chicago after graduation in May. I was wondering if you could help me with the process of applying since you just did it yourself. I am flexible also with my work hours. I want to stay in the city, but if I had to work in the suburbs I would. Anything you can tell me would be great. Thanks, hope to hear from you soon.:wink2:

im in the same boat --graduating in may. when is a good time to apply to the chicago hospitals?

Hi, I talked to St.Joseph's and they don't want to interview until March. I am finding it hard to get in touch with recruiters and not many are offering loan forgiveness which is a must for me. I am beginning to look at other cities now. Good luck!

Ok I've been having this problem and I don't know what to do. I've taken and passed my NCLEX on 10/23 and gotten my license from my home state. I'm currently in the process if getting my license endorsed in the state of Illinois. I've applied to quite a few hospitals.

I've applied to two jobs at U of C, one at Resurrection Health, MacNeal Hospital, UIC, two jobs at Rush, Adventist LaGrange Memorial, Loyola, and Children's Memorial, and two jobs at Advocate Health. I haven't heard from any of them except for UIC and one at Advocate and they both said no. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. Now given its been a full 2 weeks this week since I applied so I'm not sure if I'm just being impatient or what.

If anyone has any suggestions I'm all for it. I'll actually be in Chicago the entire Thanksgiving week so if I need to do some running around Monday through Wednesday then that's what I'll do but I need some kind of direction to go from here. Do I need to re-apply? Call them and follow up? Follow-up in person?

I would at least make a call follow up. Just ask if they received your application for x position. Some hospitals need that extra boost under their bum to get things moving. Good luck! Any of the ones you listed are great hospitals. :)
