I graduated in December and just got my license in April. For this past month I've been submitting resume after resume after resume. Probably about 50-60 so far. I am not picky, and very flexible. I applied to Hospitals, LTC, Rehabs, surgical centers. I got one interview at an ambulatory surgical center but they are looking were looking for an Experienced OR nurse so this job was definitely not for me. They don't even have training!
It seems NO ONE is wanting to give a chance to brand new nurses...
I am in DESPARATE need of money, in huge debt cause I took off work to study for HESI's & NCLEX. credit cards are maxed out.
So I've even called couple hospitals to see if I can work as a Nurses Aid but since I already have my RN license no one wants to hire me for an NA position. I've even called my previous employers but due to my license they don't want to hire me. (I've worked previously in a Radiology center and a Physicians office as a medical secretary)
I don't know what to do. I'm even ready to apply as a cashier or office work but even that seems like I am wasting my time since I won't get more nursing experience.
I am willing to move to a different state but even that costs money to apply for reciprocity. So before I do that I need to make sure that there is a job market where I will be making another license.
Can anyone give me some advice? Is there any state that is more open to brand new nurses? Is anyone getting a job in NJ as a new nurse? Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Yes I feel your pain as well. I graduated May 2009 and still no job, even the agencies making style on you. I dont know what else to do, but trying to take some extra cources like IVcert just to get some more skills. It is very frustrating ,and I am beginning to feel like I made a mistake getting into nursing, so what to do.But dont give up hope what comes down must go up again. keep the faith, thats the only thing going for me.
I am interested in your situation and hope you keep us all posted.
My daughter graduated BSN from a middle Tennessee University a year go. No job yet. She lives near the Huntsville, AL area.
My son works at Fort Knox, KY and gave me a web site that had civil service jobs on there for RN's for that base and all over the place.
Maybe google it and see what comes up? Don't forget the FBI hires RN's too.
Good luck, sweetie!
Dear New Nursing Grad Freaking Out,
Don't freak out! This is what I would do.... I would get on the internet and place several calls per day to different hospitals and talk to their nurse recruiters directly and ask them if they have a training program for new graduates. And if not, then when will one be available?
Keep doing that and if they say yes, we're planning on having one in such and such months from now, then tell them that you would really like to be considered and tell them about your interests and student credentials and ask them if you can fax them your resume. I know there are jobs out there for RN's and every now and then a hospital will train fresh graduates. I know there are places like Maricopa Medical Center in Phoenix, Arizona which trains new RN's. It is not a completely dry nursing market out there.
Good luck!
what you are experiencing is happening everywhere. You need to be open to different types of nursing. I graduated May 09 and have not been able to work in a hospital setting which is my preference. I have tried nursing homes and now I am in an assisted living as the Wellness Director and I enjoy it although it is a very stressfull jobs but it is nursing in its own way.
Dear Graduate Nurse Freaking out,
Please don't freak out anymore. I have another suggestion. After reading your post this afternoon, I just thought of something else. My background is this: I have 20 years plus nursing experience. What I know is that there are PLENTY of nursing jobs in the area of Renal Dialysis, plus, it isn't as stressful as regular floor nursing. PLUS THEY WILL TRAIN YOU. And you don't need a whole lot of experience. They also often train graduate nurses. Try calling them one by one and see which ones will be willing to train you. You might get more than one job offer in this area. I think many nurses don't go here because it's an area of nursing with a lot of need, but it's an area that's a bit forgotten. Good luck!

I graduated in New Mexico and went to and went to San Antonio. The market there is flooded with influx of nursing schools and when I came back here to "needy" state they aren't accepting apps at hospital I worked as intern for 3 months. Stay away from San Antonio, TX. I don't know about Austin or Dallas but do some research before moving.
