New Grad dilema

Awww, boo. I liked the name! No offense taken. I think I was trying to say things and they weren't coming out right :). Either way, thanks again. You and your wife sound like you have an awesome relationship as well. It's nice to see because you don't see it very often... when I quiz people at work about, I am amazed at how many have spouses at home. Very few of them HAVE to work nights but many of them CHOOSE. They say it works best for them and their significant other. I guess I just can't wrap my mind around that and hope I never can! Thanks again,

Have a great night

I know. I can't believe when people actually LIKE having the opposite shifts. That's just insane!

Yeah I liked the old name too New2ERNursing, but fmfdevildperry is good too, here in the military that is what they call us anyway "devildocs" so it's alright. Thank you for the compliment about my wife and I, we do have an awesome relationship and I consider myself a very blessed man. It does seem crazy for someone to CHOOSE to NOT be home at nights with their families, but to each their own ya know. My wife and I hear constantly how crazy it is for us to live apart while I serve our Country, but we knew it was best to keep our children stable, not moving them everywhere I go seeing how I am attached to a flight unit and can be anywhere at any moment. Sacrificing our time together seemed to be the best answer for them, and like I said, we have forever. Now I will admit that I can't wait to be able to be home every night to hold my wife and kiss my babies goodnight, but if I get handed a night shift, I guess I will adjust until the time comes for me to be able to go on days. You have a good night as well.

Thanks to you as well mfrancisco, you are exactly right, my wife has given me a peacefulness about myself and it surrounds my life. Honestly I have never had that before, not growing up as a child or in my early adult life. It makes everything you do in life worth while and makes you work even harder. My wife shows me things about love that I never acknowledged before. Watching her be the amazing mother she is to our children, well it not only teaches me how to be a great dad, but it makes me want to be the best dad I can be. She gave me a "family" and everyday that passes I thank God above he blessed me with her love, her support, her respect, and the ability to give it right back.

Yeah I am still learning about this site, so who knows why you couldn't reply. I still don't really know what I clicked on that sent me to your profile, but oh well. I was born in Winnsboro SC, which is a very small town as well and I was VERY happy to finally get out of that area. I only go back to see my grandmother when I come home to NC to visit but that is it, my wife visits her often though and she isn't a fan of that town either ha ha!

What do I like about NC??? I'd say just about everything. Everywhere I am sent with the military (I'm attached to a medical flight unit, so I go all over the US all the time) I get the same thing said to me from everyone, they ALL would love to live in NC. I guess I didn't appreciate it as much as I do now until I left and have traveled all over. NC is just "home" to me and represents happiness. Everything I love is there. It's small but not too small, the weather is always pretty great, and the community my wife and I just moved into is awesome. NC is just a great place to raise my family ya know? The people there are great, and pretty much down to earth, we have great friends and great family. Everybody does know everybody in some way, shape or form, which can be a good thing or a bad thing, but for the most part it's all good around my wife and I. NC is pretty close to anything you could possibly want to do, mountains, beach, rivers, lakes, you get the idea. My brother in law (wifes brother) and his wife have lived in Connecticut and now Maryland and they both say that they would much rather live in NC. I don't guess there is really ONE thing specifically about NC that I love so much, but I do love it there. I miss it and can't wait to get back HOME to MY life, my wife, my kids, my family.

Yeah my wife is not a fan of cold weather AT ALL either. She enjoys the rare snow we get for a few days but then is quickly ready for it to disappear.

Good deal about the new hospital, hopefully this one will work out a lot better for you and your fiance' and you will be able to see him more. I have a friend whose wife is the hiring director over Guilford County which is about an hour from where we live now and she has been helping me with getting my foot in the door in a medical field, so that way I have one option open for when I return for good. Then I also have a good friend who is in a very high position with a hospital only about 20 minutes from our home in a city called Concord, NC that is also helping me with possibly getting my foot in the door there as well, so I have a few options already which is awesome! I will still have school too but I don't care as long as I'm back home and back to civilian life. One weekend a month with the Reserves won't seem nearly as bad as 3 or more months away from everyone. I am trying to talk my wife into having just one more baby because I really want one, but from the looks of things, she isn't quite convinced ha ha.

I should be returning home here fairly soon. I know I am planning on being there for my son's first day of preschool and then for my wife's birthday. It's this time of year that I get to come home quite a bit with all the holidays and the leave I have saved up. Then after the New Year I only have a few more months until I get to be home FOR GOOD and I can not wait!

Well, good luck with the new "off the record" hospital, please keep us informed.

Hey quick question if you don't mind, How did you get an "off the record" call to the hiring director at that other hospital? Did you just have some kind of hook up or did you just call and ask if you could speak about the position "off the record"? I am interested in knowing just in case I may want to make one of those phone calls myself ha ha. Sounds pretty slick and I don't want to put my foot into too many doors before I commit to only one, ya know what I'm saying? If you would rather not answer on here you can go to my profile page and get the link to either my myspace, facebook or email I do believe, not sure though, I'm still learning this site ha ha.

Sounds good, thanks. p.s. I wasn't trying to get you to email me "personally" by the way. I just wasn't sure if you wouldn't want to answer publically about how you managed to talk to someone "off the record". I don't want anyone to get the wrong idea when I said you could go to my facebook, myspace or even email. I got to thinking about it after I had sent it and figured I may want to clear that up. I don't mind giving out my personal pages because I have nothing to hide, but I know some people can get that kind of thing twisted.

But thanks again for the info. I will use it I'm sure.

hey can anyone answer this for me that has posted on this thread?

today i had someone suggest to me that the next time i am home on an extended leave from the military, maybe i should look into shadowing a rn in a few different areas that i may be interested in. i know i would have no problem shadowing in a local nicu or picu, but i would like to also check out the emergency department. i really do want to be a pediatric pa, but here lately i have been exploring all of my options in the medical field. i have looked into becoming a pa, np, rn, or even a respiratory therapist. i guess i have interest in a little bit of everything really.

is it possible to shadow someone in the emergency department and if so, who do i contact or if i know someone could they submit the request?

While things may not be ideal at the moment, be thankful that as a new grad especially, you have a job you enjoy in the ER. It's great experience and training, which will allow you to advance within the hospital system later on. You are developing assessment/ critical thinking skills. And with this current economy, stick with whatever you've got.
