New Grad, confused about latest interview..

Published

Hi All,

I am brand new to this and hope I'm posting in the right place.. If not, sorry!

I am a new grad, and have been having a tough time finding a job. I recently had an interview (Thursday) for a full time postion on a Geriatric Psych Unit in a local hospital. The very next day, the woman called me to say I had gotten the job, but that they needed me to come in to fill out the Cori check asap (THAT day) in order for me to start orientation Monday (this convo took place Friday).

When I got there to fill out the Cori, HR told me there would be no way to process it on such short notice, and that I'd have to wait for the next orientation which would be in 4-6 weeks.

That was fine, until Monday afternoon I got a call from someone "higher up" than the woman who interviewed me and offered me the job, requesting I come in for a second interview.

If all the paperwork had checked out, I would have started orientation Monday. But because it didn't, now they want to interview me again? What do you think is going on? Im so bummed that I have to get all nervous AGAIN for another interview, especially when I was told I had the job!

Thank You all for your input, I used this site all through nursing school, but never posted anything.. it is a great place to get nursing advice though!

Sounds like the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing.

So sorry you are having to deal with this runaround - it's so frustrating.

I think the basic problem is that managers are not adequately prepared for their role in the hiring process. In US healthcare, this has become a very complex, multi-step process because we have to meet so many Federal requirements. Very few organizations have a really good training program for new managers - so most of us either have to hope that a more experienced colleague will help us out or simply learn from trial-and-error.

In all organizations that I have dealt with, the 'hiring manager' is forbidden to make the actual job offer or inform the candidate of his/her starting salary... this must be done by HR because of all the need to cover (and document) all of the underlying requirements. So, it's my guess that your hiring manager jumped the gun and was pulled back by HR.

I would strongly suggest that you make it very plain to everyone that you have already had a verbal offer... legally, they must abide by this since it was made by a legal representative of their organization. They know that you could sue them if they rescind the offer without just cause (lying on application, something turning up in your background check, etc.).

Hopefully it will all turn out OK. Good luck to you.
