new grad, cant get hired

Published

Hi, I graduated school in december of 07 with a BSN and im having so much trouble finding a job in northern NJ. I passed my test and am waiting on my license. I have only had 2 interviews from numerous resumes ive submitted. It seems they all want experience. I did not go to school in NJ, so im thinking that the hospitals would rather take NJ schooled new graduates because that is was they are familiar with. Not really sure, anyone else having this problem, or can any one get me a job? its pretty frustrating talking to all my friends with jobs from Florida when im jobless

thanks

Where are you currently living?

That is probably the problem if you are out of state...the hospital may not think you may be available for a personal interview if you are out of state or may request a relocation package....that will cause them to pass you over for a local.

I've applied locally. It's horrible where I live - hospitals closing all over the place due to our butt-munch President cutting federal funds for hospitals that take on charity cases. (patients that can't pay)

There is a lot of demand for RN's in other states. I know of many nurses who have relocated recently. We had three large hospitals from Texas last week at the Nursing Spectrum Career Fair in Teaneck, NJ. Seems the shortage is much worse down there. The pay they were offering was better than we expected. On par with NJ salaries. Also the cost of living is about 50% compared to here.

If I were back in my single days, I'd head out West for work in a second!:oornt:

I can give you one hospital in NJ which has openings, and they WILL hire new grads, cuz they hired me last summer: Bayshore Community Hospital in Holmdel, NJ.

It is a small hospital, but there are full-time positions open in Med Surg for Evenings and for Nights. There me be other positions as well.

I applied on-line. I am an older, second career nurse, and they took a chance and hired me.

Here is the website: http://www.bchs.com

Good luck!

I had the same problem finding a job. Not a single NJ hospital got back to me, and I finally ventured over the Hudson to NYC. I got lucky with job fairs and got job offers shortly after attending both at two different hospitals.

Thanks so much....I'm an older, "back-to-schooler", too! I'll do this today. I'll let you know!

Well if you are not far from Central NJ (Mercer County area.) the hospitals all need help. Just go to any of the web-sites and look at the listings. I am not sure how far away you live, but just my thought.

Not true about central NJ hospitals. A few of my fellow classmates, we graduated in Jan. 08, are unable to get jobs in Mercer County. They have applied to most of them in the area and not one has called them back for an interview. I don't know what's going on up there. These hospitals have jobs posted on their websites, but are not hiring new grads for whatever reason. Now like others have said, they are coming up against the May 08 graduates, which I'm assuming most have applied for jobs already.

Hi 206Bones! Are you a Diploma nurse or a BSN? So far 3 of the hospitals I've applied to in NY want only new nurses with BSNs. I have a diploma :scrying:

Hi 2bTrauma, and you're exactly right. To answer your question, what's been going on here is multiple, multiple hospital closings. There's hundreds of experienced nurses out there, so why should they invest in a new grad?:(
