I'm a new grad, recently licensed, and in midst of completing the paperwork and on-boarding process for a VHA RN position. It will likely be at least a month *she says with naive optimism* before I will start working.
My question: Can I start taking my CE classes now or is there some benefit to waiting until closer to license renewal time?
I figured I could focus on those classes that would be a benefit to the population I will be serving. I've reviewed the list of "free" classes and have got nothing but time on my hands.
Thanks for any feedback!

Probably ....but what does the BON in your state say?
From what I gather, it just needs to be completed within the preceding two years (TX). I was just unsure if there where reasons that I should wait (other then gaining experience).
Sometimes, employers offer free classes that you may be interested in and able to earn CE credits for. And sometimes, those classes are even mandatory. I can't think of any other good reason to wait- especially if your CE source is free.
I usually wait until the night before renewal and cram all of mine into a 4-6 hour block. I do not recommend that. It's stressful and annoying.

Thanks for the info. This is me trying to not procrastinate and do the same thing
You're smart. Maybe I should do a few hours tonight, too.

I am curious ask because I want to do the same thing after graduation. I don't want to be cramming them in at the end of the year.

Make sure and check with your BON to see if you have mandatory CEs for newly licensed nurses. I know in my state, we have some and can't renew if they haven't been done.
